And believe it or not, I spend a lot of time struggling to communicate most of my thoughts to the rest of the world! As if sometimes the words I need are from a language I once knew but can’t remember.

After stupid doula week I’ve seen posts regarding the meaning of the word (female servant) and how much weight that carries for ALL of us. Or it should.

Before we were deemed doulas we existed under various names all over the planet and in languages you have long forgotten...but our work is meant to be a verb.
An ACTION, a STATE of being, an OCCURRENCE!

Liking and commenting is NOT action!!!!
It’s bare minimum effort!

I tried to make a video of this topic but I’m tired.

I’m exhausted by the intense gaslighting that has replaced our oxygen.
And yet….
I cannot rest…truly rest…while there’s a genocide happening.
That’s not who I am.

Majority of my followers are still birthworkers, doulas and midwives….or those hoping to become one. And so this is speaking specifically to you.

As WE know, birth waits for no one.
Not even an army.
As you read this human beings are birthing and being birthed into a fu***ng GENOCIDE.
It has been allowed to continue for 20 days now. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week.

If you’re precious training and certification are from an organization choosing to remain SILENT about current events…
I consider them worthless.
Worst…I consider them a big problem.

Trees have always held wisdom in my world. When I feel the world crumbling I seek their ancient roots ….I know I need to be surrounded by trees. Or the ocean!

I recently spent time with trees high in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania.
I specifically travelled to them this time of year to witness the foliage change of fall.
And here’s what I can tell you:

The leaves don’t simply change color and fall off like I had been told my whole life growing up in LA and attending “inner city”schools! That is NOT what happens.
The entire forest knows the time has come to change. Every single tree for acres and acres, is in AGREEMENT to change. In order to survive the coming winter…the trees know they must.
Every day means less sunshine…less chlorophyll to keep the leaves green….the very life force is waning. The changes in the color of leaves is the grief over the loss of sun.
The grief that often accompanies transformation. And every individual tree shows this grief in their own beautiful way.
What I never saw was a single tree refusing. There wasn’t a single tree holding on to its ways and refusing to see the whole forest. Not ONE tree was fully green.
I stood with my bare feet in the earth and was moved by the force of this transition that’s happened for a looooong time. But I was blown away by the POWER of an entire ecosystem in agreement and solidarity FOR change.

My current mood.

This week we saw a letter from an OB practice that had everybody up in arms! (Thank you for calling this out)
I was surprised at the number of comments from doulas and birthworkers all over IG….shock, disbelief and horror.
But this letter and it’s intent is not new information to those of us in birth work!!
We know how majority of providers in a hospital setting view birth plans 🤷🏽‍♀️

I was more shocked they put that s**t in writing all out there like that! 😂
At first I was impressed by that ballsy move…like, okay , that’s some big talk! Taking full responsibility like that?!?
Not wanting the patients input in the form of a birth plan?!
But when I saw they had a 37% cesarean rate at their hospital….🥸😂🥸😂🥸 lmao
Come on!! That’s evidence you NEED all the help you can get! SMH

Instead we got a weak apology for the mistake of placing that letter in patient welcome packets 🤦🏽‍♀️
An apology for being caught and not for the harm caused by their words, their thinking and the approach to their job. And that right there is why there is no “changing the system” or “creating change from the inside” or my personal favorite…
Build fu***ng “bridges” or whatever DONA preaches 🙄

There is ZERO accountability.
How can you “fix” a problem if nobody can admit to there being one?
How do you reform a “flawed” system if it’s working exactly as designed?
You can’t.

This is part 1 of the series on how to know if you’re in a cult.
Been enjoying the work of recently and read “Freedom of Mind” over the weekend which put a framework around my thinking of how we can start to navigate out of social media echo chambers that are really just cult factories posing as communities.
Firstly it’s really important to understand the difference between ethical vs unethical social influence. There’s a way to use knowledge to influence people but the locus of control should remain with the people, not the influencer.

It truly takes a mature, ethical and conscious leader to understand the nuances of this and unfortunately there are just too many social media influencers and creators who don’t.
This is what makes social media particularly toxic. It’s full of creators who foster dependency for their own self-serving purpose, whether it’s deliberately saying some controversial s**t to drive up engagement, or programming fear of dying in you to get you to buy their business bundle.

Outside of social media there are organizations and institutions that certainly operate much like a cult, so it’s really important to sharpen our critical minds and see it clearly so that we are empowered and INFORMED in our choice to participate in groups that are going to nourish our individuality, creativity, and growth.

It’s SOimportant to understand: are you being educated? Or are you being indoctrinated? If you don’t see how important that is, then you might be underestimating how psychological programming works. Which we will also be talking about.

Looking forward to sharing more of this with you as we continue deconstructing cult dynamics and deprogramming our own minds.

She’s the mother who walked in and grabbed her kids during the recent Uvalde school shooting in Texas.

As the story developed we learned they were waiting for instructions? How to proceed?!
Speechless.
THIS is some white people s**t!

Because meanwhile, this mother had transformed. In an instant…as primal as any other mammal having her young threatened.
She sprung into action without needing anybody to tell her a fu***ng thing.
Even when she was detained by the idiot cops 🐯
She got away from them and kept going!!!!🐯
Not like she planned or prepared for this!(ahem cops)
Got in, got her babies and got the f**k out.🐯

Referral Fees in Birthwork Suck!

A few years ago a well-meaning newer doula from L.A referred a home birth client to me. She then proceeded to ask me my fee and quickly calculated how much I owed her in kick-back fees, if that said client hired. I was not only offended but completely flabbergasted .

After a good conversation with this doula , I learned that this is a common practice within her local birthwork community. Over the years , I have heard of this kind of unethical framework in other birth work communities .

Do you practice like this? If so, why??? Do you know that beside unethical this is also illegal especially for physicians and licensed midwives?

How can we say that we believe in patient autonomy if we are screening the referrals we give based on the dollars coming into our pockets?!

I freely give out referrals to all my clients always with their best interest in mind. Not once have I requested or expected anything in return from the practitioners I refer to. I refer out to practitioners who have proven that they are good at what they do. I refer out to certain practitioners because I believe our shared clientele will receive good care.

Charging referral fees is to exploit our years of experience and access to a large volume of clients .

Lets all pause and check our birthwork ethic!

Consider building Community over Capitalism

This is just one insidious way that birth-workers abuse their power with their entitlement and privilege. I'm over it and you should be too .

If this is not common practice in your community, great ! If this is common practice in your community considered divesting in this framework. Don't perpetuate it by going along with it .
