Open since 1995, Silverlake Yoga is the oldest Yoga studio in Silverlake and among the oldest studios in Los Angeles. Call it Yoga without the attitude. Whether you’re coming to class to stay in shape, relieve stress, address chronic aches and pains, or to connect to a deeper part of yourself, everyone is welcome at Silverlake Yoga! Our approach is eclectic -- incorporating many diverse styles of

Yoga, including Iyengar, Ashtanga, White Lotus, and the yoga of Erich Schiffmann. We don’t promote a particular ideology or belief system. We’re less interested in defining Yoga for the student, than in the student developing his or her own definition that reflects the student’s own discoveries and values. Our teachers have diverse backgrounds and interests, and we encourage them to teach as individuals, not as cookie-cutter representatives of a specific yoga style. Collectively, we have over a hundred years of teaching experience! We offer over sixty classes a week. These include classes for both beginners and advanced students, Flow classes,Prenatal classes, Mommy & Me classes,Kids’ Yoga, Pilates mat classes, and Tai Chi. Class size is generally 10 to 12 students. A few of our more popular evening and weekend classes can attract up to 25. No preregistration is required. Just show up a few minutes ahead of time for class and wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. One of our strengths is our Beginners Classes. Co-owner, Jonathan Emerson and teachers, Sam Graham and Jill Zeppezauer, teach in a style that’s easy to follow and that makes Yoga fun and accessible to everyone -- regardless of your age, flexibility, or physical condition. Another strength is our Prenatal Classes. Co-owner, Juliette Kurth has been teaching prenatal yoga for over ten years. She is a certified doula and has two children of her own. She conducts workshops in which she instructs other Yoga teachers how to teach Prenatal Yoga. We offer Labor Support Workshops for expecting couples and continue to support new mothers with our Mommy & Me Classes. At Silverlake Yoga we are dedicated to building community. There is a Free Introductory Class the first Sunday of each month and we offer three weekly Community Classes which students can attend for a suggested donation of $8. Meet Sabina! You can catch her class Wednesday evenings at 7:00.

Sabina has been teaching at since 2003 and practicing yoga for over 20 years. She has studied with Bryan Kest, Vinnie Marino, Kia Miller and many other teachers who continue to inspire her practice and her teaching. Sabina’s goal with each class is to provide a deep vinyasa-based practice that encourages a more internal exploration of the poses using the breath and a calm, focused mind. She uses music to create a sense of rhythm and focus that draws students to link breath with movement and flow through the practice, making it a moving meditation. Her classes are challenging but Sabina encourages everyone to work at their own pace and to be mindful that the practice of yoga in an evolution, not a destination. Says Sabina, “Ultimately, the desire is to become the person off the mat that you are on mat; strong, flexible, balanced and able to face the world in a more present way.”

Next Labor Together Workshop with Jonathan and Juliette: Sunday, November 5, 3-5 p.m.!

A Workshop for expecting mothers and their partners. Juliette Kurth and her husband, Jonathan Emerson, are co-founders of Silver Lake Yoga and certified yoga instructors for over 20 years. Parents of two children, they bring their personal experience of childbirth, as well as countless births Juliette has worked at as a D.O.N.A. certified doula to this workshop, developing a variety of touch support techniques, breathing and physical postures to help ease the laboring mom and empower the partner through labor. This class emphasizes the importance of developing a dialogue between partners so as to be useful and supportive during the birth process.

$125 per couple. Bring a 75 cm birthing ball.
