Sleep deprivation can lead to a process where the brain appears to "eat itself" through excessive autophagy, a cellular cleanup mechanism. Normally, autophagy helps clear out damaged cells and proteins, maintaining brain health.

However, during prolonged sleep loss, this process becomes overactive, particularly in glial cells like astrocytes, which support neurons. Studies, such as one published in "Nature Communications", show that in sleep-deprived mice, astrocytes increase their phagocytic activity, breaking down synapses—the connections between neurons—more aggressively than in well-rested brains. This excessive pruning can impair cognitive functions, memory, and learning, as synapses are critical for neural communication.

Lack of sleep also triggers inflammation and oxidative stress, further prompting the brain to degrade its own components. Microglia, another type of glial cell, may also contribute by clearing out healthy neural structures under stress. While this doesn’t mean the brain is literally consuming itself, the overzealous cleanup mimics a self-destructive process.

Chronic sleep deprivation, defined as less than 6 hours per night, exacerbates these effects, potentially increasing risks for neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s. Adequate sleep—7 to 9 hours nightly—helps regulate autophagy, preserving synaptic health and cognitive function, underscoring the importance of rest for brain maintenance.

$2 billion in research grant cuts and the firing of 1300 scientists is nothing less than disastrous. The brain drain to Canada, Australia, Europe and China has already started.

“Dr. Francis Collins: Deaths from heart disease are down by 75% in the last 40 years. That's NIH. Deaths from stroke are down about 75%. That's NIH. HIV, AIDS. …was a death sentence… and now you have a normal lifespan.”

Former National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins, who abruptly left his NIH research lab in February, fears aggressive downsizing could impact Americans' health.

We have Katrina Lu, L.Ac in the clinic every Wednesday from 9:15 am- 7:00 pm. Katrina’s passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine started when she was a young girl and her mother would make medicinal soups that accompanied dinner. Having grown up around TCM and the philosophy that grounds its practice her whole life, she didn’t think seriously about becoming a practitioner until Covid shuttered her job at a nonprofit for underserved families. Wanting to help others in a more direct and holistic way, she decided to pursue a formal education and completed her Master’s degree at Emperor’s College. She is pleased to be joining Echo Park Acupuncture and treats a wide berth of health concerns including musculoskeletal pain, mental wellness, gynecological conditions, fertility, and more.

NATIONAL ECONOMIC BLACKOUT DAY FEBRUARY 28, 2025

The National Economic Blackout, scheduled for February 28, 2025, is a powerful call to action aimed at protesting recent rollbacks of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies by major corporations. The primary goal is to demonstrate the significant economic influence of marginalized communities by abstaining from all non-essential spending for 24 hours, beginning at 12 a.m.
What is being asked of you?
• Do not spend money: Refrain from making any purchases, both in-store and online, on February 28.
• Support local businesses: If you must make essential purchases, prioritize small, local, and minority-owned businesses.
• Spread the word: Encourage friends, family, and your community to participate and raise awareness about the blackout.
Origins and Supporters
The initiative was launched by the People’s Union in response to corporations scaling back DEI programs. Prominent figures such as actor John Leguizamo have endorsed the movement, urging Black and Latino communities, along with their allies, to participate.

Why Your Participation Matters
Collective economic actions have historically been effective in prompting change. By uniting in this blackout, we send a clear message to corporations about the importance of DEI initiatives and the economic power of marginalized communities.
