Every now and then, a reflection comes along that captures the quiet beauty of family in the most unexpected details. This one from .maclean is especially moving. 💚

"There’s a quiet poetry in the color of the boys’ eyes. I notice it most in still moments, when all is calm, and they look up at me with an unguarded gaze. It stops me in my tracks, every time.

Elliott’s eyes are dark, a deep brown, nearly black. There’s a richness to them, like polished walnut, and a kind of gravity, something unspoken and wise beyond his years.

He takes after Dan in more ways than one. A quiet watchfulness, the way he studies a room before deciding how to engage with it. Now and then, when the light falls a certain way, a faint halo appears around the iris, as if the world is leaning in to listen.

Henry’s eyes are a remarkably lighter hazel, lighter even than mine. They are never quite the same twice, shifting with the day, sometimes green, sometimes honey, sometimes gold. There’s a clarity in his gaze, something bright and ever so slightly impish. His eyes, too, have that same halo, though his is paler, sunlit. It gives the impression of a boy lit from within.

There’s truth in the old axiom that “the eyes are the window to the soul”. In Elliott’s, a depth, a steadiness, something quietly stoic. In Henry’s, a flicker of mischief and wonder, as though the world is his to unpick, one delightful puzzle at a time.

It’s a times like these that their genetic similarities via their shared donor eggs become most evident. It binds them together, both in blood and love. Subtle but certain. It’s most visible in the eyes… so similar, and yet gently, unmistakably distinct. The same starting point, with their own quiet variations.

And through them, we can catch glimpses not only of the people that they may one day become but also echoes of those who came before… and occasionally, a glimmer of ourselves reflected back."
