✨ BE PART OF RESEARCH:
✨ ADOPTED YOUNG ADULTS’ TRANSITION TO ADULTHOOD
Adopted young adults ages 18-24 are invited to participate in a survey to share their perspectives and experiences related to adoption.

✨ For example: What advice would you give to adopted kids and families? What made the transition to adolescence and early adulthood easier or harder? For individuals who are in college: What was important to you in thinking about/choosing a college?

✨ The survey also asks some questions about birth family, mental health, and family relationships and communication.

✨ The survey takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete, on average. Participants will receive an ID # and individual survey link to participate. That individual link is UNIQUE and cannot be shared.

✨ You will receive $50 if you complete the survey. You must complete at least 75% of the questions to be paid. You can step away from it/your browser and complete it at various intervals; it doesn’t need to be completed in one sitting.

✨ To participate (i.e., to get an ID and link to the survey), please contact the Project Director, Abbie Goldberg, Professor of Psychology, Clark University www.abbiegoldberg.com

SOME GOOD NEWS: New York Takes an Historic Step for Foster Youth! Thank you FosterMore for sharing this!

On May 29th, The New York Assembly joined the Senate in passing S.B. 3781, Sofie Fashana's bill to end the dehumanizing practice of forcing foster youth to use trash bags as luggage.

Each year, roughly 14,657 children in New York’s foster care system experience 23,000 transitions between homes.

“No child should have to carry their belongings in a trash bag, as if their most cherished possessions are disposable,” said Foshana..“

By guaranteeing proper luggage when transitioning homes, this legislation ensures that young people’s most prized possessions are seen for what they are: symbols of our identity and worth.”

✨ New Blog Post from Adoption Therapist, Jeanette Yoffe, MFT
"The Ghost Kingdom: Exploring the Imagined Life of Adopted Children"

For many adopted children, there exists a hidden world of what could have been a realm of fantasy, questions, and unspoken stories about their birth families. This imagined life is what I call The Ghost Kingdom. They feel "in-between" 2 worlds. The ghosts of their ancestry and the life they live now.

In this gentle therapeutic intervention, children/teens/adults are invited to explore that inner world through storytelling, drawing, and reflection helping them make sense of the unknown, while strengthening their identity and emotional resilience.

🧠 It's a powerful tool for grief, identity, and integration.
🎨 It's creative, affirming, and healing.
💛 It's about giving voice to what was never said.

Let’s continue to honor the complexity of the adoptee experience, one story at a time. 🌱

Every adopted child carries invisible threads of curiosity—questions about where they came from, who their birth family might be, and what life could have looked like in a different world. This inner world is what psychologist Betty Jean Lifton called the “Ghost Kingdom”...an imagined space wh...

Toxic stress isn't just a buzzword—it's a critical concept in understanding how early adversity can shape a child's future.

When children face prolonged challenges like abuse, neglect, or poverty without supportive relationships, their stress response systems can become overactivated, leading to long-term impacts on brain development and health. The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University explains how these experiences can disrupt neural connections and increase risks for issues like heart disease and depression later in life.

But there's hope. Supportive, responsive relationships with caring adults can buffer these effects, promoting resilience and healthy development. It's a powerful reminder that nurturing environments and informed policies are essential to protect our children's well-being.
