Think about a time when someone’s decisions, character, or way of carrying themselves inspired you to look inward and reflect upon your own values. We underestimate how powerful each tiny shift we make towards living authentically can be. Choosing to make one small change can have a lasting impact upon someone else. Who in your life inspires you to live authentically with an open heart?

We’d like to introduce you to the newest addition to our team, Rachel Zink, AMFT. Rachel is accepting new clients in person and virtually. Her specialties include anxiety, depression, grief and loss, women’s issues, life transitions, relationship challenges, and healing from trauma. Rachel is also fond of working with creatives and is certified to practice EMDR. She is supervised by Julien Feyhrie.
If you’d like to schedule a consultation with her, please reach out to our intake coordinator at [email protected]. We asked Rachel a few questions to help you get to know her.

Q: What inspired you to become a therapist?
A: I value curiosity, naming the truth and understanding why things may be what they are. I have a background in the performing arts, and grew up finding joy in bringing life to the characters I would play. I have also worked in an early education environment, facilitating the development of young children and placing emphasis on the early attachment between child and caregiver. Bridging my love for acting and child development, I then found myself pursuing the world of psychology. All of what I love and find to be endlessly fascinating find a place to thrive for me in my work as a therapist.

Q: How do you decompress?
A: I enjoy neighborhood walks with my pup, morning coffee and meditation, journaling, then perhaps hitting a nearby trail for a hike, or a pilates or yoga class. After work with my clients, I enjoy making dinner while listening to a good playlist or podcast, and then throwing on my favorite series of choice. Currently my show of choice is Insecure. Issa Rae is phenomenal!

Q: What is your go-to therapy book/podcast/app for a general audience?
A: I enjoy the book, “Maybe you Should Talk to Someone,” by Laurie Gottlieb. I absolutely love the podcast “We Can do Hard Things,” with Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach and Amanda Doyle.

It is often said that we heal through relationships. This rings true because our wounds are often created in relationship. The therapeutic relationship can be a safe place for you to examine what wounded you with support and compassion- to rewrite your story about what connection brings.

After experiencing trauma, many people find that they have a harder time trusting themselves or the world around them. It becomes easier to trust others when we are able to trust ourselves again. Here are some ways you can begin to restore this relationship with yourself.

Self-love is tested in the moments when we make mistakes or behave in ways that feel out of character. Love both inspires us to be better and reminds us that we are valuable even on the days when we struggle to live up to our values and standards.

Think about a time when you felt deeply loved by someone else. Was it for your strength or your weakness? Are you able to feel love towards yourself on your off days?

Some of the work in psychotherapy involves becoming aware of and letting go of internal resistance to our feelings and experiences. Once we are able to tolerate and witness our uncomfortable emotional experiences, we become free to make empowered choices about how we respond.

What is one thing you find yourself struggling to accept about your experience today? Can you sit with your feelings without resisting them?

Self-compassion is the antidote to shame. Shame is the immensely painful feeling that comes up when we negatively judge ourselves. Shame may make us believe that we are bad to our core and it can rob us of connection and joy. Self-compassion is a tool that can help us get out of a shame spiral once it’s begun.

Many of us struggle to understand what self-compassion actually looks like in practice and the reality is that it can look like a lot of things! We can offer ourselves compassion by tending to our physical bodies, releasing emotions, and allowing ourselves to engage in soothing activities. Try some of these out next time you catch yourself being hard on yourself and see what shifts. Remember: self-compassion is a practice so it may take some time before it gets easier.

Crying can be a deeply vulnerable act. Many of us have learned that crying as a means to express strong emotions is “weak” or “unproductive” but science tells us the contrary. In fact, crying is good for your health. Researchers have discovered that crying releases stress, boosts your mood, and increases empathy and closeness with others. While crying, especially in front of others, can feel vulnerable, it’s best to let your emotions (and tears) flow.

Here’s a little end-of-week reflection to ease us into the weekend. Did you find yourself rushing at all this week? Did you criticize slow growth, progress, or productivity? What would happen if you practiced some patience with yourself or with others? What might change if you let your process unfold?

Notice what comes up for you as you respond to these questions. We hope this inspires some meaningful self-reflection.

If you're struggling to process something, therapy can be a safe space to unpack your experiences. Contact us to schedule a free consultation with one of our therapists. Email [email protected] or visit our website to learn more!
