I’ll walk through what to expect in the first 24 hours of feeding your baby, so there’s no guesswork when all the questions crop up.

• How feeding begins right after birth
• Hunger cues to look for
• Hand expression
• What’s normal (and what’s not)
• Tips to ease those first-day jitters

It’s ok (normal!!!) to feel touched out, overstimulated, in need of body autonomy. These are valid feelings and experiences for all parents.

But if you’re in the mode to snuggle up your little one, stroke their forehead, rub their back, let them feed from you or close to your body via bottle, there is never too much connection. Infant brains are wired for connection and safety, and each time we connect physically and emotionally, their brains create countless hew wired connections for safety & calm.

Snuggle up that babe.

This month is about supporting breastfeeding parents, highlighting inequities in access to care, and defending an act that is as old as our species. It’s not about shaming, or othering, or comparing. Never like the first. They come along for the ride, nursing on-the-go while you do all the things you normally do with your first. Older kiddo plays, you nurse. Older kiddo reads with you, baby nurses the whole time. You’re watching ballet class while nursing or handing out snacks on the soccer field. It’s part of the swirl of your new life, and in the chaos, it’s extraordinary.
