In observance of October ADHD Awareness month, join us as we debunk some common misconceptions.
1. “ADHD is just about being hyper.”
ADHD affects attention, emotional regulation, and executive function—not just physical energy. Many people with ADHD are not hyperactive at all.
2. “People with ADHD just need to try harder.”
ADHD isn’t a motivation issue—it’s a neurological difference. Support, structure, and understanding are far more effective than pressure.
3. “ADHD only affects kids.”
ADHD is lifelong. Many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD or develop coping strategies that mask their symptoms.
4. “ADHD looks the same in everyone.”
It can show up differently across genders, ages, and personalities. For example, inattentiveness or emotional sensitivity may be overlooked, especially in women and girls.
5. “ADHD isn’t real—it’s just an excuse.”
ADHD is a clinically recognized condition backed by decades of research. Dismissing it invalidates real experiences and creates barriers to care.
Remember, ADHD isn’t about lack of effort—it’s about how the brain navigates focus, energy, and emotion. It can look like creativity in motion, or like overwhelm in disguise.
