VCH - Vietnamese Community Health at UCLA

VCH - Vietnamese Community Health at UCLA We are a student organization at UCLA working to improve the health needs of at-risk, low-income communities in Southern California.

In Fall 2006, Vietnamese Community Health (VCH) was initiated by five UCLA students to assess the health problems of the Vietnamese-American community that had not been addressed by any other organization on campus. Through extensive research and personal interviews with health care providers throughout Orange County, VCH discerned several health problems in the Vietnamese community in the Garden Grove and Westminster areas, including high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis B, and cervical cancer; we found that an underlying cause of these issues is the lack of culturally sensitive health information and programs. VCH aspires to improve community health in the Vietnamese-American community through education, free services, and screenings throughout the Vietnamese community in Southern California. Equipped with a brand new staff for 2021-2022, VCH is excited to continue our traditions and expand our services. Just as the diversity in Orange County is growing, so are the health disparities within surrounding communities. This year, we aim to go beyond the Garden Grove and Westminster areas and provide our services in Santa Ana as well.

As our Winter 2026 quarter comes to an end, we wanted to reflect on our success of the quarter, particularly at our Health Sites and Health Fair! We served 157 patients at our health sites and 197 patients at our health fair, providing glucose, cholesterol, vision, and many more screenings.

Thank you to all our volunteers, patients, and supporters who helped make our mission possible--we couldn't have done it without you, and we hope you enjoyed your time with us as much as we did. Here's to making more memories in Spring quarter!

"Patient Outreach strives to develop meaningful and long-lasting relationships within all communities that we serves. This quarter we were able to reach over 500 patients with our healthcare and lifestyle newsletter, 375 patients with our mailing system, and over 657 patients with our patient contacting project, keeping them informed of VCH’s upcoming events! "This quarter, the Nutrition Nuts created PSAs on fiber and communal eating to address the rising prevalence of colon cancer and the nutritional deficiencies associated with eating alone. "Once again, Navigators have helped run a successful Health Fair by guiding patients through the venue, checking in our providers, assisting patients with parking, and collecting feedback from patients! This quarter, we also assembled the Health Fair layout, created posters for stations, wrote thank you cards for providers, created more language buttons, and put together registration packets for our patients. Additionally, Navigators had a chance to learn more about Health Fair through our HF Pictionary and HF Scavenger Hunt!"

"This quarter L² moved onto our "intermediate" portion of our curriculum where we focused on more health site/health fair oriented lessons. We focused our lessons on Viet that members could actually use at both sites and HF as well as overall more healthcare oriented terminology and usage. Our final project focused on making cheat sheets that members could use at Health Fair and since Tết was this quarter, we also had a very fun Tết lesson which incorporated the cultural aspect of L²!"

"This busy quarter, LD had our Stations in Vietnamese and Health Site in Spanish workshops to help our members feel more comfortable interacting with all patients during site and at Health Fair. In addition to reviewing and learning new language vocabulary, our members worked hard on LD’s Special Site, learning about the effects and stigmas of cognitive/mental health that we may find in the Vietnamese community. Our members planned and produced materials for a variety of fun cognitive-building games and translated different texts from short stories to tongue twisters in addition to meeting and talking to new people in their teams!!"
