So honored and excited to be presenting about culturally inclusive care in IBD this year at summit ❤️

So EXCITED to talk more about my favorite topics: IBD and cultural sensitivity. ☕️ You’re gonna hear me yap about this but it can’t be emphasized enough. We need representation from different cultures in all aspects of nutrition care (not just IBD/GI):

🍓nutrition care goes beyond nutrition
🍓diversity in research groups and trials
🍓harm reduction (or prevention) during healthcare encounters
🍓creating safe spaces and communities
🍓culturally-relevant resources
🍓support for current and future RDs to bridge the cultural gap in healthcare

If you’re passionate or even remotely interested in these topics, I want to connect with you. Hope to see you there! Get your tickets :)

It was an absolute honor to be able to share all things IBD nutrition this past weekend at ’s MyIBDLearning event with patients, caregivers and providers ❤️🤩 (swipe to the end for a goodie - credits to whoever that made it!)

So much interest and questions from patients on how to manage symptoms, achieve remission and manage ostomy nutrition. Working with a culturally inclusive IBD Dietitian (hi 👋) is key to support + personalize plans with patients! 🥘

First of all, we need legislation and insurances to cover GI nutrition visits, formulas (EEN/PEN) to optimize the power of nutrition in IBD management. The data has been showing this and it’s time to do our patients justice.

Secondly, we need more multidisciplinary collaboration and individualized support not just for outcomes, but better patient care EXPERIENCE. We cannot and shouldn’t do IBD care alone.

Thank you for having me!

Share this post with IBD warriors and providers on the power of nutrition! 🍎

If what we eat does not impact our IBD, we would not have dietary therapies created for IBD, or actually see efficacy in inducing remission. 🤔

Very exciting times for sure, but we also need to balance risk and benefits of implementing dietary therapies with our patients. 🩺

For example, exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is a well established therapy to help induce remission in both pediatric and adults Crohn’s, with newer evidence as an adjunct therapy in acute severe UC. But it may not be appropriate for certain patients after a thorough evaluation and joint discussion.

It’s all about the right tool, right patient, right time! Find yourself an IBD care team (👋) that can support you on your IBD journey.

Can’t talk about IBD without focusing on malnutrition!

The inflammatory nature of IBD and its associated impact on GI function puts patients at a high risk of malnutrition. Prevalence ranges from 20-80%, with higher percentage in Crohn’s🔥

Fatigue from IBD + malnutrition compound on each other. Which means getting and staying nourished is challenging. 😴

Which means detection and appropriate nutrition intervention is key! 🔑

If you, your loved one or your kiddo is experiencing some or all of these symptoms - please reach out to your care team for support.

And 100% get an IBD dietitian (like myself!) to support you in your IBD journey. ❤️

Have you experienced malnutrition before? And how have your conversations around nutrition in your IBD journey been like? Let me know in the comments below 👇

Trying to get more protein in but scared about the gas, bloat and pain that can come along with it?😞

I see this struggle a lot among my clients who are:

🔥 reintroducing foods fresh out of GI surgery

🔥 trying to stay nourished while having an IBD or IBS flare

🔥 trying to mesh cultural ingredients with the typical “high calorie, high protein diet” that providers has told them to follow with no plant based options 🫠

No fear. Your cultural GI dietitian is here 🤣

Our traditional, go-to ingredients have way more nutrition than you think.

🌰 Chestnuts are great go-to snacks

🥜 Nut butters are great as spreads and in smoothies

🍲 Tofu and lentils: Use them in your stir-fry’s, soups, etc.

Every culture has its own high protein, plant based foods. I help my clients explore their own cultural foods and integrate them into their nutrition goals.

‼️No one should sacrifice their cultural and comfort foods in the pursuit of recovery or health. If you’ve been told that, please run and find someone who can meet you where you are. 🙏‼️

Have you been told that as long as you get 8h of sleep, you shouldn’t be tired anymore? 🥸

You’re mixing up sleep VS rest!

Also if that’s been your mode of operation you’re probably feeling: “I’m (still) producing and achieving results at work but I’m perpetually tired and burnt out.“

“AND my gut flares, 💩’s, pain, anxiety, depression is not getting better 😑. I hate myself and this world. “

Guess what? You’re literally burning your gut out by not resting. 🦠

You can’t expect to fight a wildfire easily 💦 🔥 when your body ecosystem has the perfect condition for spreading wildfires.

When it comes to addressing gut health issues, it’s not just about popping probiotic pills and hoping your body will recalibrate to an optimal state. ❌😵🙅‍♀️ let’s look at the big picture.

You can avoid a lot of unnecessary frustration, $$$ and time spent but not getting symptom relief by working with a digestive health dietitian 👋 who supports you and your health journey as a whole.

Per popular request: 5 tips for constipation relief! Follow for more gut health tips 😎

When it comes to constipation it isn’t just about food. Makes sense to approach it from a diet perspective, but as more research backs the presence of “gut-brain connection”, it has unlocked other areas to help us address functional constipation. (More to come on this)

It gets complicated if you’re dealing with any medical conditions that directly impacts the functionality of your gut (IBD, gastroparesis, motility issues, etc). 🫣 It is important to have a good multidisciplinary team including dietitian (hi 👋) to address GI issues safely and appropriately.

Any of these tips surprise you? Lemme know by commenting below ⬇️

Follow for more on gut health nutrition! 🎈

Do you feel like you are perpetually hungry, frustrated, tired, bloated, constipated and you have no idea why? 🥲

Well, are you nourishing your gut by incorporating all these food components consistently in your meals? 😮

If you are already struggling with medical conditions that impacts your gut function, not eating and fueling yourself adequately might be making it worse. 🫣

🍎 Carbohydrates —> Main fuel for your brain and body

🫘Protein —> keeps you fuller for longer, builds and repairs muscles, bones, cells. Enzymes, antibodies are made up of amino acids which comes from protein.

🥦 Fiber —> helps regulate bowel movements, lowers inflammation (due to short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced via fermentation in colon), lower cholesterol levels, manage blood sugars

🥑 Fats —> source of energy, helps with fat-soluble vitamin absorption, build cell membranes and sheaths surrounding nerves, blood clotting, muscle movement, and decrease inflammation.

Incorporating ingredients from these food groups CONSISTENTLY will help with improving your energy and gut symptoms. 🎉 Many clients of mine struggle with balancing between nourishing themselves while avoiding trigger foods. This is something we talk about during sessions and navigate together based on personal needs ☺️

What tips do you have on nourishing yourself without triggering symptoms? Drop them in the comments below!⬇️
