On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, UCLA Health proudly honors the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), 'Ahiihirom (Elders), 'Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations), and all those who came before, stand with us now and will come after. Today, we reflect on the strength, resilience and cultural legacy of Indigenous communities — especially the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash tribes, whose ancestral lands include what we now know as Los Angeles. Join us in learning, honoring and acknowledging the profound contributions of Native peoples.

Art is expression, or what Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology art therapist Paige Asawa, PhD, LMFT, describes as "color meditation." With support from the American Cancer Society, cancer patients, survivors and caregivers participated in art therapy hosted at the Los Angeles Chargers training facility.

The final creations came together in a mosaic, an installation that celebrates the power of connection through initiatives like Crucial Catch. Read more: https://ucla.in/3IWIPig

In Nature, Dr. Peyman Golshani introduces SLIM, a high-speed 3D imaging method that captures over 1,000 volumes/sec with a single camera. It enables real-time visualization of neural activity, blood flow, and fast motion across biological systems.

Squeezed light field microscopy (SLIM) combines ideas from tomography and compressed sensing with light field microscopy to enable volumetric imaging at kilohertz rates, as demonstrated in blood flow imaging in zebrafish and voltage imaging in leeches and mice.

Franklin’s life has been a journey through one diagnosis after another, from autism spectrum to bipolar and obsessive-compulsive disorders. When a test revealed that he had a rare mutation in his NR4A2 gene, his family emailed an expert on the topic: Daniel Geschwind, MD, PhD, a distinguished professor of human genetics, neurology and psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Learn how the family’s collaboration with Dr. Geschwind is helping Franklin’s condition and contributing to the research of future treatments for others:
