5 States of Myeloma: ⬇️
There are 5 different states of Myeloma disease. Have you heard of all of these?
🔹 1. MGUS: Stands for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. MGUS is when M-protein is found in the body, but there are not enough plasma cells to call it myeloma, and no treatment is required.
🔹2. Smoldering Myeloma: This is when there are enough plasma cells in the bone marrow (more than 10%) to call it myeloma, but there are no symptoms. Patients typically just require close monitoring.
🔹3. Plasmacytoma: is when a single group of abnormal plasma cells grow.
🔹4. Active myeloma: is where there are typically multiple symptoms, such as bone damage, fatigue, kidney failure, anemia, and a compromised immunity.
🔹5. Plasma Cell Leukemia: When the myeloma spreads from the bone marrow into the blood, it is known as plasma cell leukemia. Myeloma patients who develop this at diagnosis have a better outcome than those who develop it during the course of their disease.
No matter what stage, there are more treatments available now than ever before. 🎉
