👁️✨ Did you know LASIK and EVO ICL can actually be combined?

This is called a bioptics approach. It’s usually done for patients with very high prescriptions that can’t be fully corrected with one procedure alone. First, the EVO ICL implant corrects the majority of the prescription. Then, a fine-tuning LASIK, SMILE, or PRK procedure is done on the surface of the eye to treat any remaining refractive error.

✅ Great for patients with extreme myopia or astigmatism.
✅ Delivers sharper vision than either procedure alone when used in the right cases.
✅ Safe and effective when planned by an experienced refractive surgeon. 👋🏼

So while LASIK and ICL are usually thought of as “either/or,” in select cases, they work beautifully together to give patients clear, glasses-free vision.

👉 DM me “consult” if you want to know if you’re a candidate!

Last November I had the honor of being invited as one of 15 American ophthalmologists and one of 200 globally to The Tower of London to celebrate Sir Harold Ridley and his invention of the intraocular lens (IOL). Over one billion IOLs have been implanted since his creation of this revolutionary technology that continues to evolve year after year, making cataract surgery the most common surgery performed in the history of the world. Modern day IOLs in tandem with advanced diagnostics and lens formulas allow us to give near LASIK like results with refractive lens exchange (RLE) and refractive cataract surgery. So many lives have been changed from this invention and many more still will continue to benefit from Ridley’s hard work. As with most inventors and creations, his work was not without controversy and backlash, and I feel his story serves as both inspiration and guidance for how we can continue to push ophthalmology forward even in this modern era. A big thank you to , .global, .us, and for an incredible and unforgettable evening - it was one of the highlights of my career and I will cherish the memory forever.

About a year ago I had the opportunity to work alongside the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Refractive Surgery Editorial Committee to rewrite the back-of-the book-questions for the 2025-2026 major revision of the BCSC Refractive Surgery textbook. When I was a resident and fellow studying for OKAPs and board exams, the back-of-the-book questions were an essential part of exam preparation. However, I sometimes felt that the questions were slightly outdated, worded ambiguously, or too heavily focused on one topic versus another. My goal for revamping this next generation of questions was to focus on the fundamentals of refractive surgery while modernizing the content to reflect the advancements in the subspecialty with topics like lenticule extraction, phakic IOLs, and modern intraocular lens implants. I hope future residents & fellows find these new questions useful for exam preparation and I hope they help make refractive surgery fun to learn. I love what I do as a refractive surgeon and I love teaching - it was an honor to contribute to this!

I recently had the pleasure of being invited to speak to STAAR’s national sales team alongside my good friends Drs. Roberto and Roger Zaldívar, two legends in refractive surgery who have been instrumental in the development and advancement of phakic IOL technology. Their work has truly shaped the past, present, & future of vision correction, and it was an honor to discuss the ongoing impact of EVO ICL together. Moderated by the wonderful Scott Barnes, MD, we had a great and nearly two hour long conversation with the team ranging from how to teach new surgeons to tips and tricks for ICL sizing, diagnostics, nomograms, and value proposition.
