My cousin, Noel Andersen, gave a sermon at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Koreatown today. We wore red for The Pentecost. He said that we should come together at this time for strength in solidarity.

Behold: The hippiest, artsy-craftiest gift that I have ever given -Mandalas you could both hold in your hand and view to meditate. I gave them to all of my family one Christmas. Each one had been hand painted. I used a sea star as a template. A Mandala is your view of the world, often depicted from a bird’s eye view. The more advanced mandalas become three-dimensional under a soft-focused gaze. Monks would sit on a mountaintop for days on end in deep meditation, in order to hold all the picture of an intricate Mandala in the mind. This would take a very focused mind, and it is believed that the image has come from a celestial connection, from the sky, from above limited mortal understanding. A monk would hold the entire image in the mind and bring it down from the mountaintop, to create a sand Mandala, which would then be wiped away after a ceremony. Mandalas symbolize both the singularity of our experience and also the impermanence thereof.
