Organization by Marcus G

Organization by Marcus G A Free Association about OMG Channeled by the Organization Gods: I organize things…stuff, you & your life. Organization is a craft and art form. It is okay.

It is different for everybody. I work with you to find out what that looks like for you to make it efficient and perfect for you. All of life’s details require some form of organization: thoughts, receipts…old love letters. Because life never stops happening, often times these details find themselves in clutter or disarray, unresolved and unorganized. At the time, it may seem like, “Oh, it’s just this,” or, “Oh, it’s just that,” but these items attract each other and they become stacks of papers that have not been sorted, overflowing closets of boxes and bags (that although may seem organized, all contain clusters of unorganized matter), libraries of music with no artwork, artist or titles listed, etc. There is no clarity in any of this. It is my belief that each detail of our lives offers a snapshot of who we are and how we show up for our lives and for others. I remember watching a completely disheveled woman in the library on day. She held up the line as she argued with the librarian over late fees while her hands rummaged and shoveled through her purse that overflowed with receipts, gum wrappers, random papers, credit cards, and who knows what else. “This always happens,” she ranted. “And this is just the library,” I thought to myself. “How are you showing up in the rest of your life?”

Clearly, this woman had no clarity as she sifted to find the receipt that showed she had paid her late fees already. How would the situation have looked differently if there had been some type of organization in place for this woman? Some times, people feel that they are organized and that they do have systems that work for them, when to the rest of the world, they do not. Starting with one area, like a purse, is a great gateway into seeing how other areas of life function for an individual. I like to compare organization to a deep tissue back massage. The clutter and mess represent the knots. Like a massage, some knots run deeper and tighter than others and with a little work, all of that pent up energy can be released restoring clarity, ease & peace of mind. After our initial session, I devise an action plan based on your needs and goals that targets each knot. The action plan serves as our foundation for accountability. Each organization “knot” takes on an organic life of its own. Sometimes, where there is physical clutter, there is emotional clutter. Organizing can be healing, and just like that massage, soothing. We take the time that we need so that you always feel clarity and peace of mind. For some, clearing clutter is like exorcising ghosts; it is a release of the past to more clearly see the present and future.

A Simple Way to Stay Focused & Organized: Each day, make a "To Do" list & stick to it. I used to do this on Post-Its, but I find it to be more effective if I keep my lists together in a small spiral. This way I can track my successes and keep watch of what still needs to be done.

If you are sentimental, and I am, when you finish the spiral, you will have a small journal that tells a story of your daily achievements. :)

Gain awareness & clarity on how you spend your time. Take control!

Keep a time journal for one week; this is similar to a food journal in weight management. Starting with the time you wake up, write down all of your daily activities with corresponding times. Track EVERYTHING, including time spent social networking, surfing the web, and watching TV. The more detailed & specific you are, the more clearly you can see where your time goes.

Review your journal. Which activities contribute to your success? Which ones do not? What adjustments can you make with your time to feel more successful? The more consistent you become with managing your time, the more empowered & successful you will feel. Empty activities that do not feed your success will start to feel like high calorie, high sugar foods; they do not align with your goals, and they are probably best set aside for less frequent indulgences.

Organizing your time is just as important as organizing your items; they parallel. Often, I hear clients express frustrations that sound like, "I never have enough time," or, "I feel so overwhelmed, and it's like I am not getting anything done!" What does your day look like that you feel so overwhelmed? How are you spending your time? How are you holding yourself accountable?

As much as I love a home where everything is in place, I am a total sucker for dog toys laying around the house. The difference between this and clutter is that seeing the dog toys makes me feel good; clutter does not make me, or anyone I know, feel good. Of course, this is relative & different for everyone. I feel it is important to discuss because it is a part of learning and knowing thyself. We all have our idiosyncrasies and organizational allowances. What is one of your organizational quirks?

This morning, my friend Nick and I beat our best time in cleaning the dog kennels at Pet Orphans. How? Strategy. In corporate America, I often heard phrases like or . These are all synonymous for having a clear & organized action plan for achieving a successful end result. In this case, our strategy helped us finish faster, with just as much attention to detail, and allowed us the benefit of more quality time with the dogs. :)

Where can you use more strategy in your home or work life? What benefit(s) could you stand to gain from a little more strategy?

The other day, I bought one large key ring for $1 to replace the spider web of five smaller ones I had laced together for different purposes. No more shaking it out, and I love the streamlined feeling of all keys on one ring. It may sound trivial, but all of the small projects contribute to the larger What is a small organizing project you can take on today?

If you are single, how does it really benefit you to shop in bulk? I can appreciate planning ahead so that you don't run out of something, but what about a year's worth of Scope? Is it necessary? How does it really serve you? I work with so many single clients who love shopping at large wholesale retailers, but then feel frustrated when they don't have space to put their great deals & finds. Wholesale retailers are fantastic, but maybe not the best match for every need.

I definitely believe in the power of a ritual, and organizing is no exception. I feel a ritual enhances and makes the organizing experience more fun and more powerful. For example, I burn sage to clear away the stagnant, old energy and white candles to help shed light & clarity on the project.

What is your organizing ritual?

A root cause of an unorganized life and/or space: Avoidance, the act of avoiding.

What are you avoiding? Paying bills? Cleaning out your closet? Fixing your door k**b? How does avoiding any of these tasks really serve you? What can you do to change it?

Take one step at a time. You can do it!
