“Latinos have been economically active in what is now the U.S. since 1513, over 500 years ago,” explains David Hayes-Bautista, CESLAC Director.

During the 300 years of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, Latino commerce traveled along the Camino Real that stretched from St. Augustine in Florida to San Francisco, California. Ships crossed the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, tying together the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Iberia to create the world’s first truly global economy, which was multicultural, multilingual, and multiracial. In 1988, Dr. Hayes-Bautista’s first book predicted that there would be 15.2 million Latinos in California by 2030. This projection proved accurate; in 2023, there already are 15.5 million Latinos, seven years early.

Dr. Hayes-Bautista’s 2017 book, La Nueva California, pointed out how Latinos strengthen basic American values, such as the work ethic, family, and healthy living.
