Being in the field of medicine I’m in, I’ve seen my fair share of people suffering from BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder). It always saddens me when I learn that some people are lacking the support they need and deserve.
Recognizing BDD can be difficult because it distorts the way you see yourself. However, true friends and honest healthcare providers can (and will) help you identify the signs and seek the support you need.
Here are some common symptoms to watch for. If any of these resonate with you, I encourage you to seek professional help. And if you’re a patient of mine, I will happily refer you to professionals who can treat you appropriately.
🚩 Obsessively engaging in behaviors aimed at fixing or hiding a perceived flaw (frequently looking the mirror or skin picking)
🚩 Having a strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly and undesirable to anyone
🚩 Avoiding social situations in response to a perceived deformity
🚩 Being so preoccupied with appearance that it causes major distress or problems in your social life, work, or school
🚩 Constantly comparing your appearance with others, to the point where it interferes with daily activity
