The year 2023 marked a significant period in veterinary medicine, particularly concerning the health of our canine companions. A notable outbreak of canine influenza, often referred to as dog flu, raised concerns across the globe. Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses.

Signs and Symptoms of Canine Influenza

According to Cornell University, the clinical presentation of canine influenza in dogs can range from no symptoms to severe illness. The most common symptoms include:

Coughing: This is often the first sign and is usually a dry, hacking cough that can be mistaken for kennel cough.
Fever: An increased body temperature often accompanies the cough.
Nasal Discharge: Initially clear, it may become thick and colored as the infection progresses.
Lethargy: Decreased energy levels and a noticeable decrease in activity.
Reduced Appetite: Dogs may show less interest in food.
Difficulty Breathing: In more severe cases, dogs may exhibit signs of respiratory distress.

It’s crucial to note that some dogs may be asymptomatic carriers of the virus, meaning they can spread the disease without showing any signs of illness themselves.

New Years Eve is a time of celebration and joy, but it's important to keep our furry friends safe during the festivities. Here are some tips to ensure your pets have a happy and safe New Years Eve.

1. Create a safe space: Set up a quiet and comfortable area in your home where your pets can retreat to when they feel overwhelmed. This could be a separate room with their bed, toys, and familiar scents.

2. Keep them indoors: Fireworks and loud noises can be frightening for pets. Keep them inside during the celebrations to prevent them from getting scared and running away. Ensure all doors and windows are securely closed to avoid any escape attempts.

3. Provide distractions: Keep your pets entertained with their favorite toys and treats. This will help divert their attention from the loud noises outside and keep them occupied.

4. Stay calm: Pets can pick up on our emotions, so it's important to remain calm and relaxed during the New Years Eve celebrations. If you show signs of stress or anxiety, it can make your pets more anxious as well.

5. Secure decorations: If you're hosting a New Years Eve party, make sure to securely fasten any decorations that could be dangerous to your pets. Avoid using confetti, streamers, or party poppers that can be ingested or cause harm if chewed on.

6. Watch out for food hazards: Many traditional New Years Eve foods can be harmful to pets. Keep chocolate, alcohol, grapes, onions, and other toxic foods out of their reach. Stick to their regular diet and offer pet-friendly treats instead.

7. ID your pet: In case your pet does manage to escape or get lost during the celebrations, make sure they have proper identification. Ensure their microchip information is up to date and consider having them wear a collar with identification tags.

Remember, the safety and well-being of our pets should always be a priority. By following these tips, you can ensure that your furry friends have a stress-free and enjoyable New Years Eve celebration.

Christmas is a joyful time of year, but it's important to keep our furry friends safe during the holiday season. Here are some tips to ensure the safety and well-being of your pets:

1. Christmas Tree Safety: Make sure your Christmas tree is securely anchored to prevent it from toppling over if your pet accidentally bumps into it. Avoid using tinsel, as it can be dangerous if ingested by your pet. Keep ornaments and lights out of reach to prevent chewing or swallowing.

2. Poisonous Plants: Some common holiday plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly can be toxic to pets if ingested. Keep these plants out of reach or opt for artificial alternatives to avoid any potential harm.

3. Candles and Open Flames: Keep an eye on lit candles and open flames, as they pose a fire hazard if knocked over by a curious pet. Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative.

4. Festive Food Hazards: Many holiday foods are not safe for pets, such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and alcohol. Keep these foods out of reach and remind guests not to share them with your pets.

5. Secure Gift Wrapping: Keep wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows out of your pet's reach. Ingesting these items can cause choking or intestinal blockages.

6. Noise and Stress: Loud noises from holiday gatherings or fireworks can be stressful for pets. Provide a quiet and safe space where they can retreat to if they feel overwhelmed.

7. Visitors and Escaping: With guests coming and going during the holidays, it's important to make sure your pets don't escape through open doors. Keep them in a secure area or use baby gates to prevent any accidental escapes.

8. Electrical Cords: Keep electrical cords hidden or secured to prevent pets from chewing on them. This will help avoid electrical shocks or other injuries.

Remember, the holiday season should be enjoyable for everyone, including our pets. By following these safety tips, you can ensure that your furry friends stay happy and healthy throughout the festivities.
