“One of the most important roles it plays is in glucose metabolism. Skeletal muscle regulates more than 75%of insulin-mediated glucose disposal, helping control glucose and lipids while reducing the risk for metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.”

“humans lose 0.5% of their skeletal muscle mass per year in their 40s, 1-2% after age 50 years, and approximately 3% per year after age 60 years.”

“prefrailty is now more common in younger people. We’re becoming physically compromised at younger and younger ages.”

“We can’t predict when an accident or critical illness may hit, yet the state of our skeletal muscle at that time can play a dramatic role in our recovery…This is why 50% of women 65 years old or older who break a hip in a fall never walk again.”

“A lifelong approach to muscular health,…involves regular resistance training and consuming adequate dietary protein.”

“resistance training directly stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and improves mitochondrial function, he said. Mitochondria are critical for energy production, and their decline is linked to aging and chronic disease.”

“This has been shown to improve energy metabolism and reduce oxidative stress. For older adults, this can translate to not only better endurance but also a lower risk for metabolic diseases and improved longevity.”

“resistance training is effective in preventing osteoporosis and reducing the risk for fractures in older adults. While weight-bearing exercises like walking and running are beneficial, resistance training targets areas at high risk for fractures, such as the hips and spine”

“muscles release myokines, such as interleukin-6, which have anti-inflammatory effects. These myokines help regulate the immune system, improve fat metabolism, and contribute to better metabolic health. This means that beyond strength and mobility, muscle health plays a key role in modulating chronic, low-grade inflammation — a driver of many age-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.”

“the evaluation of muscle health…dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry… surrogate assessments such as calf circumference…simple questions (“Do you do any form of resistance training?”)…can go a long way to establishing a baseline…grip strength…to monitor progress over time…a proxy for overall strength.”

“exercise prescribing rates as low as 17% with 84% of doctors saying they felt inadequately trained in the subject of resistance training.”

“two key areas that may make strength training more palatable to patients: First, data now showthat using lighter weights can build just as much strength as heavier weights, so long as the lifter pushes to near failure in the last few repetitions (aka “the hard reps”).”

“And second: It’s never too late to start. In a meta-analysis of adults aged 70 years or older (including nonagenarians), Schoenfeld’s team saw profound improvements in muscle strength and muscle hypertrophy within 8- to 12-week training programs. “These were novice trainees who’ve never done anything before,” he said.”

We focus on looks and performance, but muscle’s metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and disease-resisting properties make it an available, improvable key to better health.

Who needs this now? Give it a listen.

Join me today for a to January 15th, 1968: the day that "Nefertiti," the fourth album I played on with the Miles Davis Quintet, was released. Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, , and I knew each other so well by the time we recorded this album... We probably didn’t do more than two takes on the whole thing.

I’m grateful to the legions of people in our LASS community who’ve reached out to me asking about my safety. Thank you. I’m in Venice & thank goodness south of the Palisades tragedy. LASS is near Century City and safe as is Des in Redondo Beach as well.

The places in Pacific Palisades that are wiped from the face of the earth may be etched in my memory, but these places are now gone forever. Iconic landmarks I’ve passed on the PCH since 1982 on hundreds of Sunday drives are gone. I’m grieving more each day, but am grateful to be one of the lucky ones.

We need to help each other in these times. LASS is a community & Desiree Di Lorenzo & I are here to create & sustain an environment where we encourage each other during these difficult times.

Thank you all. 🩵🙏🩵

“Saving up to $1 billion a year in healthcare costs sounds ambitious, but it’s possible with a shift in care. 💰”

“Prof. Ilana Ackerman from Monash University, addressed the stark gap between what we know is effective for managing osteoarthritis and what our healthcare systems prioritise.”

- lifestyle changes like exercise, diet, and patient education are proven first-line treatments, these interventions receive minimal funding.

- costly procedures like knee replacements - often unnecessary for people with mild symptoms – are still widely used, burdening the healthcare system and leading some patients to outcomes that show little improvement.

- data suggests that up to 1 in 3 could be avoided through early intervention.

“More than 200,000 Medicare patients with back pain underwent $2 billion worth of unnecessary surgeries, including spinal fusion”

"The times in which spinal fusion and laminectomy work for spinal stenosis is when the stenosis is causing neurogenic claudication, or radicular symptoms, meaning you're getting pain shooting down the leg”

"The answer about why Medicare pays is because Medicare doesn't really use appropriateness criteria to decide whether to pay,"

“It's really not terribly accepted in academic circles to operate on just back pain or discogenic disease”

“there's been a number of studies that showed that losing weight, stopping smoking, and engaging in healthier activities is a better treatment for back pain when you don't have a specific diagnosis, like nerve compression or deformity.”

Rosen also pointed to the heavy influence that the spine surgery equipment industry has on hospitals and surgeons. "I mean, spinal hardware is $1,000 a screw and you put in three or four levels, you can get $20,000, $30,000 of equipment put in."

“There was also wide variation in unnecessary procedures from state to state”

Hakeem Olajuwon on the NBA legend who taught him how to use finesse instead of strength

The Houston Rockets icon didn't become one of the greatest players overnight. The Nigerian-American center maximized his God-given abilities through sheer hard work and dedication.

He was also encountered one of the sport's legends, which helped propel him to superstar status. The legendary Moses Malone played with Hakeem before the Dream's early years in the NBA, an experience that sharpened his skill and hardened his mettle.

"I would never have accomplished what I did if I did not play against Moses at Fonde," Olajuwon said, referring to the legendary basketball gym in Houston graced by various NBA legends.

The two-time NBA Champion claimed that while he knew the rules and fundamentals of the sport, Malone was the one who taught him how to excel at it.

"With Moses, there were no rests, no breaks," he continued. "He was working every time down the court — scoring, rebounding, or just making you feel his body. He would laugh when he slammed into you. If you tried to take a breath, he went by you or over you. There was no stop."

During their duels, Olajuwon would try to bully Malone but to no avail. The Chairman of the Boards was just too strong. It was then that The Dream realized he had to use finesse to beat Moses.

"I usually couldn't go through Moses because he was just so strong," Olajuwon said. "So I had to learn to use speed and agility to go around him. That's how I built my game."

“it’s almost always safe to move with low back pain. Motion is lotion”

“Ninety per cent of low back pain is not linked to one specific structural cause (eg a joint, muscle, ligament or disc) and instead is the result of a number of physical and psychosocial factors, according to Prof O’Sullivan.”

“Scans rarely show the cause of low back pain and so-called ‘abnormal findings’ on scans like disc bulges, disc degeneration and arthritis are common and normal for most people without pain, especially as they get older.”

“90 per cent of low back pain is caused by a combination of physical and non-physical factors including poor sleep, relationship or family stress, job dissatisfaction or financial pressures.”

“the dirty dozen of myths about low back pain. These include “my back hurts a lot so I must have damaged it”, to which Prof O’Sullivan said: “There is lots of pain without injury and low back pain has much more in common with headaches, which we don’t usually associate with injury.”

He also suggested that rather than resting or avoiding carrying or lifting heavy objects to prevent back strain, the best approach is to strengthen the back by finding an exercise that you enjoy and that you will keep doing. “It’s hard to exercise without any pain, but it’s almost always safe to move with low back pain. Motion is lotion and it’s about spending time doing the activity – swimming, pilates, walking, yoga, aqua-aerobics – that you are most comfortable doing and that you will continue to do for a long time.”
