The diaphragm is a parachute-shaped muscle which is the primary driver of breath.
It is also part of the “intrinsic core,” a series of muscles which provide stability through our center and help keep us upright.
By maintaining tension, it also creates an emotional sense of stability, leading to a lot of people keeping emotional tension locked up in their diaphragms.
This is part of why sobbing and deep belly laughs are so cathartic - you’re literally wringing that tension out of your body.
