Statement on Federal Autism Announcement

The Autism Society Inland Empire is aware of recent federal claims linking autism to acetaminophen use during pregnancy and promoting leucovorin as a “treatment.”

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that reflects the diversity of human experiences. There is no credible evidence that acetaminophen causes Autism, and while leucovorin may support some individuals with specific metabolic needs, it is not a universal solution.

Misinformation harms our community. It can lead to confusion, stigma, and misplaced efforts that distract from meaningful support and inclusion. We urge families, professionals, and policymakers to rely on evidence-based information and to center the voices of Autistic individuals in all conversations.

We remain committed to supporting Autistic people and their families with trusted resources, advocacy, and compassion.

He’s nonverbal, but he hears you.

When you’re around nonverbal or nonspeaking people, remember that just because they can’t speak doesn’t mean they can’t understand. And just because they don’t respond doesn’t mean they aren’t listening.

I don’t have access to Charlie’s mind, but I know he understands far more than he shows. He doesn’t answer us, but he hears us. He takes it all in—the words, the emotions, the energy around him.

That said, I’m not going to pretend he understands everything. I know there are limits. Concepts like why swallowing screws is dangerous, why smashing items break them or the flow of a back-and-forth conversation are still beyond his grasp right now. But that doesn’t mean what we say and do doesn’t matter.

I believe that much of what he hears is still there, filed away, waiting for its time to shine. Maybe it’ll express itself one day in a way I can’t even imagine. And until then, I’m going to keep talking to him, because I know he’s listening.

"Dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder. Research has shown that brain plasticity decreases
through childhood.

It takes four times as long to intervene in fourth grade as it does in late kindergarten (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development - NICHD)
because of brain development and because of the increase in content for students to learn as they grow older.

Children at risk for reading failure can be reliably identified even before kindergarten (Gaab, 2017).

Struggling readers who do not receive early intervention tend to fall further behind their peers (Stanovich, 1986)."

Who is surprised that DOGE laid off the head of autism programming at the US National Institute of Mental Health?

Cara Pugliese was chief of the Autism, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Externalizing Disorders Interventions Research program.

Our hearts are with our American friends, families, and followers. How are you feeling?

Even though we don't know what kind of research they were up to, evidence-based therapies usually mean ABA. While we don't condone those in any way, we doubt those making the cuts considered the type of research being funded. They just saw the word 'autism' and gave it the heave-ho.
