According to a literature review in Frontiers Psychology, adult friendships, especially high-quality ones that provide social support and companionship, significantly predict well-being and can protect against mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. These benefits persist across the life span.
In the Journal of Experimental Society, one study found that people even judged a hill to be less steep when they were accompanied by a friend.
Scientists studying friendship have found similar brain activity among friends. The regions responsible for a range of functions, including motivation, reward, identity, and sensory processing showed these similar brain processes.
So it’s not surprising that I met these besties in our Master’s program. Going through this rigorous program sometimes felt like climbing a steep hill. Having them travel through this amazing and yet sometimes difficult journey of life with me has been a blessing. I am so grateful for them. We had an incredible girls weekend together enjoying a Friendsgiving, catching up, sharing and simply being in sisterhood.
Have you connected with your besties recently? If not, it’s time to make a plan.
