Did you know Dr. Hajo was a professor of acupuncture and herbology for over 20 years? Teaching students is one of his greatest passions.

At Hajo, we want to serve as an educational resource for people interested in traditional medicine. In the next few posts, we will go through Dr. Hajo’s paper: “What is a Meridian? Differences between Oriental Medicine and Western Medicine.”

In traditional medicine, the body is seen holistically as more than flesh and connected to the spirit and universe.

Fundamentally, oriental medicine is based on yin-yang and five phase theory, which we will go into in later posts.

I grew up with a big herbal cabinet—one of those beautiful, many-drawered chests where each compartment held a different herb. As a child, I loved the ritual of opening the tiny drawers, smelling and touching the herbs, and asking my dad about what they do. It felt like a magical world of healing was tucked inside that cabinet.

We eventually got rid of it because we ran out of space, but I still think about this cabinet.

I’ve been looking for the perfect apothecary cabinet for Hajo and fell down a rabbit hole looking at vintage herbal cabinets from around the world.

The Neijing Tu is a complex and multilayered diagram integral to Taoist religious and alchemical practices. It merges earlier internal alchemy traditions with a unique vision of the body as a site for self-cultivation and transformation. Central to the cultivation of vital essences are techniques like visualization, breathwork, and the activation of the body’s subtle dimensions - processes that are rooted in spiritual journey across the spiritual and physical landscape. The body’s energy pathways (meridians) are mapped in the diagram as lines resembling natural landscape features, like rivers and mountains, symbolizing the flow of qi through the body, akin to water or wind in the natural world. The Neijing Tu reflects the Taoist idea that the body, like the universe, contains interconnected fields, seeds, and grain that, when cultivated, lead to enlightenment and the grasp of totality.

At Hajo, we recognize the long history and scholarship that accompanies the practices of traditional medicine.

Today, Dr. Hajo 🐥presented a seminar on “Spirit, Health and Herbal Formulas in the Donguibogam 17th Century Classical Medicine Texts” 👨‍🏫

The seminar discussed…
1. Definition of spirit
2. Spiritual character of body organs
3. Psychosomatic symptoms related to spirit
4. Prevent and treatment by herbal formulas
5. Prevent and treatment by individual herbs, acupuncture and moxibustion

Education and teaching is core to Hajo’s mission. Let us know if this material would be of interest to you and we would be happy to translate or record our next seminar.

Part 2: Q&A with your practitioner!

📚How did you start studying acupuncture?

Even though we are immigrant family, my father brought old classical text about oriental medicine. When I saw that book in my new life in the USA, it made me very nostalgic. I decided to dedicate my life to studying and practicing traditional medicine.

💨What is your favorite herb?

I love every herb. Right now, I like Fang Feng (防风)- which means defense from wind! In Asian medicine, wind has two sides - one is good and one can carry infectious disease. When we say Fang Feng, we are protecting against disease. This herb helps ensure that wind does not enter your body and cause health imbalances. Out of the wind-treating herbs, Fang Feng is known in classical texts as a very smooth herb.

🎹What is your favorite music album?

Chopin Etudes by Yun-chan Lim.

🏈Why do you love the 49ers?

I arrived in the U.S. in 1988 at the end of October. In January, the 49ers won the Super Bowl with a comeback victory. It was so impressive. That is why I am a lifelong 49ers fan.*

*fans of all football teams are welcome at Hajo

The best food to overcome the HEATWAVE 🥵

🍉🍉🍉

🐯Watermelon is called “white tiger decoction” (the coldest herbal formula) in traditional medicine.

🟢🔴The green and red color of watermelon will help sleep in the endless summer.

💪Good for fighting heat, rich in Vitamin C, and potassium.

When choosing a watermelon, it’s best to pick one with a curled stem and a small belly button shape on the bottom. Additionally, if it produces a clear, resonant sound when tapped, rather than a hard thud, it indicates the watermelon is fresh and tasty.

Stay cool and come in anytime for a refreshing session at Hajo :) Our soft opening is until the end of September!
