Opening hundreds of safety-sealed pill packs for patients a week causes repetitive motion for nurses, leaving them susceptible to nail breakage, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. That's when Veronica Pellegrino, RN, a nurse on the orthopedic unit at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, decided she wanted to find a way to make this process easier and quicker.

Pellegrino submitted her idea to the UCLA Health Innovation Challenge, is now working with UCLA Biodesign to create a business plan and product development for her device, Popsy - which will launch soon.

The Innovation Challenge is a yearlong accelerator open to members of our community, including: doctors, nurses, researchers, trainees and staff members. Ideas like Pellegrino's can advance through the program, and applications are open through June 30th. Get inspired, and submit your idea: https://ucla.in/4blvl8S

Meet some of the volunteers that bring light into our hospitals. Among the nearly 3,000 volunteers at UCLA Health, several already spent decades working at the university or in the health system and, after retirement, wanted to stay connected.

⭐ Eilish Hathaway spent 35 years in her career at UCLA Health. The week she retired, she walked into the Volunteer Services office. Her decision to volunteer at UCLA Health was “totally, 100% about giving back.”

⭐ Andee Korn worked in IT on campus for 28 years. She staffs the information desk, supports with computer duties, and lends her IT skills to the UCLA Health Auxiliary.

⭐ Sheri Monsein worked at UCLA Health in nursing for 37 years before retiring, then returning for a couple more years. She missed connecting with patients and families, and wanted to give back to the place she considers home.
