Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has earned its fifth consecutive Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center — the nation’s highest honor for nursing excellence. Only about 17% of Magnet®-designated hospitals have earned this distinction five times or more, making this a meaningful achievement in RRUCLA’s pursuit of clinical excellence.

This recognition reflects years of nursing leadership, innovation, and a deeply rooted culture of collaboration — all in service of delivering compassionate, high-quality care to the patients and families we serve.

In the cardiothoracic ICU at UCLA Health, nurses like Lindsay Brant, CCRN, are redefining end-of-life care with compassion and dignity. Through Community—a nurse-led initiative—patients’ final wishes are honored, families are comforted, and staff have a space to process their grief together.

From bedside music by the Threshold Choir to comfort patients to moments of silence that recognize each life lost, Community ensures that even in death, humanity is never forgotten.

“We are a family here, and we treat patients like they’re an extension of our family,” Brant said. “Nursing is the best excuse in the world to love on strangers, to treat all humanity as if it was your closest friend and loved one. And it’s such a gift to be able to do that.”

Nutrition is essential to every individual's health journey, and our Registered Dietitians (RDs) play a key role in impacting patient health outcomes.

This Nutrition Month, see what these Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center RDs have to say about their experience and expertise.

🌟 Elina Luskina, RD
❓ What do you love most about your job?
➡️ Working in the ICU, I am able to see how my recommendations directly impact a patient’s nutrition status. I also love being a part of a multidisciplinary team.

❓ How can we make good food choices when we're always on the go with work/school?
➡️ Pack a well-balanced snack less healthy options are not as appealing. Meal prepping and batch cooking can be helpful to save time and money. As another option, you can choose takeout meals higher in protein and fiber on your route.

🌟 Alejandra Gordillo, MS, RD
❓ Why did you want to become an RD?
➡️ Having witnessed the impact of nutrition on chronic disease at a young age, I developed a profound interest in understanding the pathophysiological processes by which our bodies metabolize food. This curiosity, combined with my passion for helping others, drove me to pursue a career as an RDN. In this role, I can combine my love for nutrition science with my desire to support individuals in preventing illnesses and optimizing nutrition care for various disease states.

❓ What's your take on any eating styles or trends currently happening right now?
➡️ While current eating trends have become popular, many of them are focused on short-term results. It’s important to do thorough research and focus on sustainable habits that improve health.
