I'm still feeling the appreciation and positive effects from the retreat I lead in Ladakh, India with International Yoga just weeks ago.

This photo may be the rare one that has all of us together inside one of the spaces at the Hemis Monastery, which was founded in the 11th Century.

It's amazing to be in spaces that have a history of sacred practice for thousands of years which are continuing to this day. That consistent practice creates a vibration, not only in each person who is practicing, but in the actual space of practice. Students shared that at some of the monasteries, they could feel something present. Maybe it was a spirit, and maybe it was just the continuation of practice that doesn't stop when we leave our bodies.

A practice is a powerful thing. It can seem simple on the outside, but it can move mountains on the inside. If you haven't explored meditation, and yoga as a whole, give it a try. And if you are practicing, keep learning. The magic comes from the authentic lineages, which haven't stopped, for thousands of years.

The Pranavayus are channels that Prana travels. If we are lacking in one of these five directions, then some yoga poses can feel difficult. Our capacity for breathing is limited. It also contributes to a negative mindset. Simply learning about the Pranavayus and strengthening the weaker one(s) can improve our yoga poses, our health, and our nervous system.⠀

Years ago, I had a student (not the one in this picture) lay down and breathe. Everyone saw that Prana, (one of the five Pranavayus) was weak. The breath was not filling her lungs. It was reaching her belly, even lower, and it was reaching her collar bones and upper chest. But the lungs remained quiet.⠀

So, I lightly put my hand on her upper chest and guided her to inhale, filling the lungs, trying to feel air entering. As she followed my instructions, tears began to well up within her and she softened into a sweet sadness, feeling touched by the inside. ⠀

This student had been so busy "feeding herself" with food, overwork, and outer sources that she was starving on the inside. She was hungry for oxygen, not food nor accomplishments. She needed to feel that Nature was already there for her, that she was loved.⠀

Another student (not the one in the photo) told me that backbends hurt her back, she didn't like them. Watching her, I saw that she was collapsing into her lower back, and, her upper body was lifeless. I guided her to breathe underneath her sternum, towards her heart. She didn't even have to do the pose, just pause and breathe inside. She, also, began tearing up and crying.⠀

If I had focused only on alignment and ignored the role of the subtle body for the backbend, she could have ended up injured. ⠀

We should not impose yoga postures on bodies. We need to make sure that the inner energy is in alignment with what the outer body is doing. ⠀

The Pranavayus are channels which Prana travels throughout our being. If we are lacking in one of these five directions, then some yoga poses can feel difficult. Our capacity for breathing is limited. It also contributes to mental tendencies that don't serve us. Simply learning about the Pranavayus and strengthening the weaker one(s) can improve our yoga poses, our health, and our nervous system.

In one Subtle Body training I taught, I had a group of students watch a student (not the one in this picture) lay down and breathe. We saw that Prana, (one of the five Pranavayus) was weak. The breath was not filling her lungs. It was reaching her belly, even lower, and it was reaching her collar bones and upper chest. But the lungs remained quiet.

So, I lightly put my hand on her upper chest and guided her to inhale into her lungs and try to feel the air entering. She was guided to relax during the exhale, there wasn't anything to do no forcing. As she followed my instructions, tears began to well up within her and she softened into a sweet sadness, feeling touched by the inside.

This student had been so busy "feeding herself" with food, overwork, and anything else that one does, that she was starving on the inside. She was hungry for oxygen, not food nor accomplishments. She needed to feel that Nature was already there for her, she was not alone.

Another student (not the one in the photo) told me that backbends hurt her back, she didn't like them. Watching her, I saw that she was collapsing into her lower back, and, her upper body was lifeless. I put my hand on her sternum and told her to simply breathe underneath my hand. She didn't even have to do the pose, just pause and breathe inside, underneath my hand. She, also, began tearing up and crying.

If I had forced her externally into the pose, aligning her bones and muscles properly, and ignored the role of the subtle body for the backbend, she could have ended up injured. We should not impose yoga postures on bodies. We need to make sure that the inner energy is in alignment with what the outer body is doing.

There is more to yoga than what you see with your physical eyes. When you awaken your Subtle Body, you can open to your heart and Inner Wisdom. This is lifechanging.

There’s something truly special about practicing together.
While yoga and meditation are ultimately personal practices, when we gather—online or in person—our shared intentions ripple outward.

Group practice lifts us, aligns us, and offers clarity of heart and mind. In these times, your breath and focus become healing not just for you, but for the world.

Join me this week to move, breathe, and raise vibrations together. Let’s get inspired by each other to increase positive qualities within ourselves and for the world, with your breath, intention & purposeful concentration.

There is so much more to yoga than asana. It can open hearts and heal the soul, which is priceless. 🙏

Om Mani Padme Hum

This is the main mantra that pulses all over Ladakh, India, a region that mostly practices Tibetan Buddhism. It is chanted to purify negative karma and to cultivate positive qualities.

The prayer wheels are infused with this mantra so when you turn one, you are surrounding yourself with the vibrations of these sacred sounds. Prayer wheels are super large, which require effort of the whole physical body to turn them. And some are smaller. On the path to many monasteries, sometimes there are 108 prayer wheels. (108 is a very sacred number for many, many reasons.)

Our group really enjoyed any opportunity to spin a prayer wheel and send the mantra into the world. I know that we are changed from receiving the blessings of this mantra.

Our culture is so fixed on reacting to things, judging others, and taking offense.

What makes me sad is that people are not asking a really important question - WHY is someone behaving the way that they are behaving? WHY did someone say the thing that they said?

It would be great if we could pause from thinking that we do know what's going on and that we are right about things and actually ask the person - WHY? What is going on?

I have seen this play out a number of times recently. A student behaving in a way that pushed someone else's button and that other person assumed that the student was mean. When I later asked the important question, WHY, I learned a whole other scenario that one could not have imagined. The student was in emotional pain and could not manage how the behavior was landing on the outside, the internal pain was overwhelming. Had the other person known about the pain, patience and acceptance would have been applied instead of judging and reacting negatively.

We will never get full answers when we ask this question. And that's OK. Life is complicated and answers are not one-sentence-easy fixes. I do hope that we can hold onto the awareness that there is always more to a story than what we see. I do hope that we can try to listen with an open mind instead of judging. The more we live the WHY, the more we learn of other perspectives, which increases our capacity for compassion.

Ask WHY. Increase your compassion and connection. The world can feel hard and lonely these days. Let's soften the ride and share it with each other.

There is so much more to yoga than asana. It’s found in the Subtle Body.
The Subtle Body isn’t just Chakras — it’s the energy which rules our breath, mind, and whole being. The Subtle Body is the key for magic and transformation. When we learn to work with this energy, it elevates the yoga practice to a powerful level.

If you’ve ever sensed there was more waiting for in your yoga journey, the Subtle Body is the gateway. 🌀

This fall, I’m offering a 50-hour Master Training in the Subtle Body course that brings yoga back to yoga’s authentic roots. Together, we’ll explore:
✵ Pranavayus & Pranayama
✵ Bandhas, Nadis & the flow of subtle energy
✵ Chakras
✵ How the mind works + the power of Mantra
✵ The Joy of Meditation, where yoga truly begins

… and how all of this can advance your personal practice and your teaching.

This popular training is designed for yoga teachers & experienced practitioners who are ready for the next step...
📍 Live on Zoom + On-demand recordings. Join from anywhere.
🗓 Two immersive weekends: Sept 19 – 21 & Oct 3 – 5, 2025

About Jeanne

Background

Jeanne Heileman specializes in discovering the needs of an individual and gently guiding each student to their own grace and balance. She creates a safe haven for students to dive deep, find their edge, and transform. Jeanne teaches with sensitivity, generosity of spirit and a good dose of humor. Founder of Ta**ra Flow Yoga, Jeanne brings together her years of studies and teaching skills into a style of yoga inclusive of asana, Ayurveda, mindfulness, with the added focus of the poses’ energy. She was introduced to yoga as a dancer and actress. Facing ongoing pain from scoliosis, yoga allows her tools for physical realignment and acceptance of difficulties. In her quest for a deep and meaningful connect with all that yoga has to offer, she studied extensively in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, ParaYoga, Vini and Trantra Yoga; each adding a deeper element of meaning to her practice and teachings. Jeanne – 500-ERYT, ParaYoga Level II certified teacher, YogaWorks senior teacher – tours internationally teaching teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats.

Teachings

Jeanne’s teaching grew immediately and soon she was teaching a full schedule at various studios all over Los Angeles and privately. She spent almost every weekend in a yoga workshop, learning from the most advanced teachers visiting the L.A. area. In addition to visiting teachers, Jeanne studied for extended periods of time with a number of senior teachers. Erich Schiffmann guided her to soften when she was fresh out of training and tried to make her students look “Iyengar-perfect” before they were ready. Gary Kraftsow taught her the value of Vini Yoga as a tool for therapeutics, and also as a means to advance a practice by working from the inside-out. After ten years of trying, she finally developed a love of Iyengar Yoga and began studying closely with Karin O’Bannon, Tias Little, Kofi Busia, Elise Browning Miller and now Lisa Walford. Desiree Rumbaugh taught her the possibilities of poses for all people through Anusara Yoga and introduced her to John Friend. Then she finally met Yogarupa Rod Stryker who taught a workshop blending alignment similar to Anusara Yoga with inner energy cultivation similar to Vini Yoga, adding some deep philosophy and wisdom not available anywhere else at the time. In 1999 Jeanne decided to study with Rod Stryker for her second teacher training.
