The other night, instead of watching a movie or doing something "fun," I did something for my future. I attended an online candidate forum for the upcoming election of the CD13 Council Member seat.

I don't like the way that my country is moving. My city is also having problems with crime, extreme high cost of living, and many other issues. Instead of complaining, I am fighting back with my vote. In order for my vote to really matter, I have to educate myself to know who is running, even for the "smaller" roles in government.

This is yoga in action. Yogis take responsibility for their community and care about others. We show up at rallies and protests and - the skilled action is in voting.

This message isn't to ask for compliments, nor criticisms. My desire is to inspire you to do the same. It takes time and energy to educate yourself about the issues and make a plan to vote. It also doesn’t seem very interesting - until we lose rights or things fall apart, leaving us to suffer the consequences

(And by the way, boy, do I feel like a slacker when listening to all that some of these candidates are doing with their spare time!)

Let's care about our communities and take responsibility in our right to vote. Things can get better with our participation.

Some days are just difficult to get through, even if you are a yogi.

Yesterday was one of those days. Nothing worked. All aspects of technology were not only inoperable, I didn't know how to fix them, I didn't know how to get help. In that stopping point, I just wanted to cry. And quit it all.

It is ironic that we are in an age where technology is the major vehicle for me to teach a practice and philosophy that is over five thousands of years old. And if the technology isn't working, then I'm out of a job. Or a career. Or whatever this is that I do.

Sometimes we all have difficult days when we want to quit our job, our relationship, anything. Just because the mind is harboring very convincing thoughts doesn't mean we have to take action.

Yoga asana and meditation teach the value of consistency, no matter what. We may adjust how we practice on low energy days, but we show up. We have days where the mind is our personal hell, and we keep moving forward, one small step by one small step. It doesn't look pretty at all.

Through the very challenging day where I mentally quit teaching yoga and went off ...?... somewhere to do...?.... something (what would I do???) I kept moving forward in very small steps. Tears in my eyes because I really just wanted to have a crying fit and feel sorry for myself, but I kept moving forward.

The day ended with one major obstacle solved after heaps of patience as I navigated through customer service. It was a win. And it reminded me that we all get days that are just really, really difficult. How we manage and handle the difficult days are possibly how we shape our character.

If you have been having a tough day(s), don't give up. Act as if you are on your yoga mat or meditation cushion and just adjust the position. Breathe deep. Don't believe the thoughts, which will really want to take you. Just move forward, one small step.

This is how we human. And it's beautiful.

This Sunday is the final Mantra & Meditation class.

We’ll be working with the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra—a deeply healing and transformative practice known for its ability to heal, protect, and steady the mind and heart.

Together, we will chant the mantra 108 times, allowing its Shakti (vibrational power) to build and move through the body. From there, you’ll be guided into meditation, where the effects of the practice can fully settle and integrate.

We’ll begin gently, with a short introduction to mantra and a bit of movement to prepare the body—so whether you’re new or experienced, you’ll feel supported every step of the way. All bodies are welcome, you can sit in a chair or even lay down if needed.

There is something profoundly special about practicing in community, especially with mantra. It’s not just something you hear—it’s something you feel. It's also something to take home and keep pulsing afterwards.

This Saturday, reconnect to your center. ✨

In the Ayurvedic Kapha season, it’s natural to feel a bit heavy, slow, or stuck. The antidote? Stoke your inner fire.

This unique workshop is designed to awaken your core—not just physically, but energetically. When the Third Chakra is activated, clarity, strength, and forward momentum return.

And yes… it feels really good.

In our time together, you will:
• Understand the full anatomy of the torso (beyond just “abs”)
• Explore the Third Chakra and its role in confidence, power, and direction
• Work with Samana Vayu to build deep internal strength
• Learn the Bandhas and practice Agni Sara to ignite and cleanse
• Access deeper layers of core support—from pelvic floor to diaphragm
• Develop the ability to stay steady and centered, even in a challenge.

You’ll leave breathing more fully, feeling stronger, clearer, and more connected within.

If you’ve been feeling sluggish, scattered, or ready for a shift—this practice meets you there and moves you forward.

This week is chock-full of exciting things!

In addition to the full schedule that I'm teaching, we also have a fun + prana-filled workshop to strengthen and access your core on Saturday afternoon. This is the perfect type of practice to burn away any heaviness, negativity, fatigue and sadness from the Ayurvedic Kapha season. You will leave feeling light and bright, breathing deeper than you ever imagined.

It is also the last of three, monthly Sundays devoted to Mantra and Meditation. We have been working with the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, an ancient and powerful mantra that brings healing to the chanter. It's got a kicky energy, you will love this practice, sliding easily into a meaningful meditation. All levels welcome, you will know the mantra by the end.

Sunday, April 19, is considered THE most auspicious day of the whole year in the Hindu and Jain traditions. It symbolizes eternal fortune, prosperity, and new beginnings.

It's an excellent day for all forms of charity to the underprivileged; the good merit can last forever.

It's also a great day to purchase gold and invest in real estate. Many people believe that starting a new business or project on this day ensures healthy success to the endeavors.

Whatever spiritual practice you have, it will go far when done on this day. Make time for your practice to plant seeds for effortless evolution.

I thought to share this information with you today, so that you could plan to align yourself, even for a little bit with this sacred energy, tomorrow.

Happy Akshaya Tritiya! May you feel the magical energy all around you and may it follow you wherever you go.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is one of the two "unlocked" mantras, which means that you don't need to be initiated in order to practice with it and receive all of the fruits from your efforts.

This mantra is the embodiment of Lord Shiva, the deity responsible for destruction that leads to transformation. It is His presence, in vibratory form.

It is also the embodiment of fire. If you are familiar with Vedic Fire Ceremonies practiced in India, and by trained practitioners in the west, this mantra is that sacred fire. A sacred fire doesn't burn to harm. Again, it illumes for transformation and radiance.

You are invited to join me for the last of three monthly sessions that I have been offering on this mantra.

After some explanation and some simple stretches, you will learn the mantra and then we repeat it 108 times, the length of a meditation mala. This is a very powerful experience to feel the pulses of the mantra on your skin and how they seep into your organs, your breath, and your mind. It brings healing to the chanter, and to anyone you dedicate your practice.

Moving into a meditative state after pulsing this mantra is so easy and truly fulfilling. In our challenging times, practicing meditation and the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra are anchors to hold you steady.

About Jeanne

Background

Jeanne Heileman specializes in discovering the needs of an individual and gently guiding each student to their own grace and balance. She creates a safe haven for students to dive deep, find their edge, and transform. Jeanne teaches with sensitivity, generosity of spirit and a good dose of humor. Founder of Ta**ra Flow Yoga, Jeanne brings together her years of studies and teaching skills into a style of yoga inclusive of asana, Ayurveda, mindfulness, with the added focus of the poses’ energy. She was introduced to yoga as a dancer and actress. Facing ongoing pain from scoliosis, yoga allows her tools for physical realignment and acceptance of difficulties. In her quest for a deep and meaningful connect with all that yoga has to offer, she studied extensively in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, ParaYoga, Vini and Trantra Yoga; each adding a deeper element of meaning to her practice and teachings. Jeanne – 500-ERYT, ParaYoga Level II certified teacher, YogaWorks senior teacher – tours internationally teaching teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats.

Teachings

Jeanne’s teaching grew immediately and soon she was teaching a full schedule at various studios all over Los Angeles and privately. She spent almost every weekend in a yoga workshop, learning from the most advanced teachers visiting the L.A. area. In addition to visiting teachers, Jeanne studied for extended periods of time with a number of senior teachers. Erich Schiffmann guided her to soften when she was fresh out of training and tried to make her students look “Iyengar-perfect” before they were ready. Gary Kraftsow taught her the value of Vini Yoga as a tool for therapeutics, and also as a means to advance a practice by working from the inside-out. After ten years of trying, she finally developed a love of Iyengar Yoga and began studying closely with Karin O’Bannon, Tias Little, Kofi Busia, Elise Browning Miller and now Lisa Walford. Desiree Rumbaugh taught her the possibilities of poses for all people through Anusara Yoga and introduced her to John Friend. Then she finally met Yogarupa Rod Stryker who taught a workshop blending alignment similar to Anusara Yoga with inner energy cultivation similar to Vini Yoga, adding some deep philosophy and wisdom not available anywhere else at the time. In 1999 Jeanne decided to study with Rod Stryker for her second teacher training.
