At the French Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Liévin, Jakob Ingebrigtsen stunned the athletics world by setting a new indoor mile record of 3:45.14.

The 23-year-old Norwegian shattered Yared Nuguse’s mark from just five days earlier with a dramatic finishing kick that left rivals trailing.

Pacemakers ensured a blistering pace, with Ingebrigtsen matching the 800-meter split of Nuguse’s previous record and then powering away solo.

Already the indoor 1500m world record holder, Ingebrigtsen aims for the outdoor 1500m record next season.

With the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow looming, his Liévin victory heralds a new era in middle-distance running.
