How Does Group Therapy for Addiction Treatment Work?

In the context of addiction treatment, group therapy offers multiple advantages that complement individual therapy and other treatment modalities. Here’s how it contributes to the recovery process:

-Sharing experiences – Members share their struggles and successes, providing each other with insight and understanding that they are not alone in their journey.
-Building coping strategies – Through discussions and role-playing, members learn and practice new coping mechanisms for dealing with cravings and triggers.
-Enhancing communication skills – Engaging in group discussions helps improve interpersonal communication skills, which is essential for repairing relationships affected by addiction.
-Providing feedback and accountability – Members offer each other constructive feedback, fostering a sense of accountability, which is vital for recovery.

Note that group therapy is different from family therapy, which focuses on the dynamics between family members and how they contribute to an individual’s addiction. Group therapy, on the other hand, is led by a trained therapist and focuses on each member’s individual experiences and struggles.

It’s important to note that Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are different programs, although they may seem similar at first glance. Both offer intensive treatment for individuals dealing with substance misuse disorders, but there are some key differences.

-A PHP usually requires more time commitment from clients than an IOP.
-While a PHP can last up to six hours, an IOP typically requires three to four hours of treatment per day.
-PHPs offer a higher level of structure than IOPs. This can be beneficial for individuals who need more support and guidance during their recovery journey.
-IOPs offer more flexibility in terms of scheduling and are often more accommodating for those with work or family obligations.

At The Canyon at Santa Monica, the PHP and IOP programs are both designed to provide clients with the necessary support and treatment for lasting recovery.

What happens in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)? During an IOP, individuals will participate in group therapy sessions, individual counseling sessions, educational classes and activities that help them learn how to cope with their addiction. The program will also provide medication management, which can help the individual manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings. Additionally, there may be social activities that allow individuals to build relationships with other participants in the program. Visit our website for more information: http://spklr.io/6187BmXUD.
