"I was sober, but I wasn't free."

We often think that putting down the bottle or the needle is the end of the journey. But for George Thompson, it was the start of a much deeper battle with p**n and love addiction. Glynis and George discuss "Getting Clean but Living Dirty"—the paradox of being substance-free while still being driven by toxic behaviors.

Are you trading one high for another? It’s time to heal the root, not just the symptom. ❤️🩹

In this clip from the Peak of Possibility Podcast, Jeannine Coulter shares the painful moment she realized something was very wrong.

What she thought was the flu turned out to be opioid withdrawal, and it forced her to face the reality that she had become physically dependent on opiates.

For many people struggling with addiction, this realization comes slowly — and often painfully — when the body begins to rely on the substance just to feel normal.

Jeannine shares how heartbreaking that moment was and how it became part of the journey that eventually led her to recovery.

“Wait… sobriety means no alcohol?”

In this clip from the Peak of Possibility Podcast, Jeannine Coulter talks about a moment in early recovery that caught her completely off guard.

When she first started attending 12-step meetings, she realized sobriety meant letting go of alcohol too. That realization was hard to accept.

She also struggled with hearing the message about not regretting the past or wishing to shut the door on it. At the time, she wasn’t ready to make peace with what had happened. She was grieving the life she felt she had lost and was focused on trying to get it back.

That disconnect made her feel misunderstood in early recovery.
Her story is a reminder that recovery doesn’t always start with acceptance or peace. Sometimes it starts with confusion, resistance, and a lot of painful emotions.

Sometimes relapse doesn’t start with drugs or alcohol.

Sometimes it starts with heartbreak.

In this clip from the Peak of Possibility Podcast, Jeannine Coulter talks about how the end of a relationship brought up deep feelings of grief, loss, and abandonment. Those emotions reopened old wounds that felt overwhelming—and eventually led her back to using substances.

For many people struggling with addiction, substances become a way to escape emotional pain that feels too heavy to carry.

Jeannine shares honestly about that moment and how learning to face those emotions became part of her recovery journey.

What does it mean when someone starts tracking their substance use on a calendar?

For many people struggling with addiction, there’s a phase where they try to regain control by making rules — only using on certain days, limiting how much they drink, or keeping track of it to prove to themselves it’s “manageable.”

In this clip from the Peak of Possibility Podcast, Jeannine Coulter shares how she tried to control her substance use by marking it on a calendar.

At the time, it felt like a way to stay in control. In reality, it was a major red flag that addiction had already taken hold.
Addiction has a way of convincing us we’re still in charge… even when we’re not.

Most people focus on quitting drugs and alcohol when they get sober… but keep ni****ne.

What many don’t realize is that continuing to smoke or v**e can actually increase the risk of relapse. Ni****ne keeps the addiction circuitry in the brain active, which can make it harder to fully break the cycle of addiction.

In this clip from the Peak of Possibility Podcast, Jeannine Coulter talks about why quitting ni****ne can be an important part of long-term recovery and staying sober.

Sometimes the addictions we keep are the ones that quietly pull us back.

One of the hardest truths about recovery is this…

When someone begins to heal, it can disrupt the entire system around them.

Families, friendships, and relationships often form patterns around addiction. When one person starts changing, it forces everyone else to confront those patterns too — and not everyone is ready for that.
In this clip, trauma therapist Tommy Montanarella, LPC, talks about the uncomfortable reality that sometimes the people closest to us struggle with our growth the most.

Healing can challenge the roles people are used to playing.

But choosing recovery is still worth it.
