R: Reframe the Situation
When things feel overwhelming, it’s easy to see them as all good or all bad. Instead, try to find a new way to look at the situation. Find the grey area, and focus on what’s manageable.
E: Engage in a Distracting Activity
When your mind is stuck on something, dive into a different activity. Doing something else helps shift your focus and calms your mind.
S: Focus on Someone Else
Shift your attention to another person. Help a friend, listen to someone, or do something kind. This helps take the focus off of what we are experiencing.
I: Intense Sensations
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try something that grabs your attention, like holding ice, taking a cold shower, or stepping into the sun. Intense sensations can help ground you.
S: Shut It Out
If you’re in a situation that’s too much, step away if you can. Leave the environment or mentally put the problem in a “box” to deal with later.
T: Focus on Neutral Thoughts
Think about things that don’t add to your stress. Count, focus on colors around you, or repeat a calming phrase to yourself.
T: Take a Break
Give yourself permission to pause. Whether it’s taking a day off or delaying a task, sometimes a break is what you need to reset.
