“While one of the most devastating results of the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly been loss of life, experiences like loss of academic and job opportunities, social outlets and milestone celebrations also call for grieving.”

I had the pleasure of contributing to this article that examined the phenomena of shadow losses among young adults coping with grief during the pandemic. This article examines which shadow losses are commonly experienced and healthy ways to validate and move through grief.

A recent study found that young adults are struggling to cope with shadowlosses during the pandemic. Allowing space to grieve losses both big and small not only validates our feelings but makes for a healthier future.

"Neuroscience research has shown that the only way you can change your survival orientation in your brain is by accessing your interoceptive world—the part of your brain that allows you to observe yourself. Our culture is constantly forcing people to be distracted by stuff in order for them not to feel themselves. But the only way you can be yourself is to know yourself.

When you’re traumatized, it becomes even more difficult to know yourself because trauma is actually NOT the story of what happened a long time ago; trauma is residue that’s living inside of you now; trauma lives inside of you in horrible sensations, panic reactions, uptightness, explosions, and impulses. Because trauma lives inside of you, getting to know yourself can be the scariest thing to do. It takes an enormous amount of courage to visit and befriend yourself and to feel what that uptightness is about. Having the courage to let yourself relax and to notice the flow of your body is central for recovery." -Dr. Bessel van der Kolk

Contrary to belief, amongst the college age population, the consumption of alcohol has decreased during Covid-19. Researchers suggest this time period could have long-term effects on this group's alcoholic consumption. I had the privilege of contributing to this article by providing insight and awareness towards why this trend is being observed right now and the long term impacts this may have.

A recent study shows college students have reduced their alcoholic consumption as a result of the pandemic. Living with parents might provide long-term benefits to individuals prone to addiction.

“The most significant determinant of resilience — noted in nearly every review or study of resilience in the last 50 years — is the quality of our close personal relationships, especially with parents and primary caregivers. Early attachments to parents play a crucial, lifelong role in human adaptation.”

I have always been fascinated with the concept of human resilience, that when it came time to doing my dissertation, I did an extensive literature review and analysis on the studies that have been conducted on this phenomenon. I concluded in my analysis as well that the most significant determinant that led to positive mental health in female adult survivors of child sexual abuse was the quality of their close personal relationships and early attachment to their caregivers. Early attachments set the blueprint of how we cope and formulate healthy internal working models to handle stress and form relationships.

To my surprise, I found that most human beings are resilient than not. “Each of us has to figure out what our particular challenges are and then determine how to get through them, at the current moment in time, the good news is, that most of us will.” Learning this gave me and still gives me so much hope, especially during uncertain times.

The very earliest days of our lives, and our closest relationships, can offer clues about how we cope with adversity.

“Our work is to become conscious of our own trauma, our own triggers, our own ego fears. THIS allows us to hold space for someone else’s.”

Is this your love language?

The inner child is in each of us.

In the moments we lash out, fear abandonment, or shut down completely.

So often these moments with partners (feel) so intense in the present moment, because we are re-experiencing the trauma of our past. The moments we weren’t seen. Weren’t considered. Weren’t heard.

The moments when we felt unloved, helpless, or afraid.

Understanding your partners trauma is a love language.

It says, “I know you’ve experienced wounding. I know people have let you down. Betrayed your trust. Or left you to deal with emotions you weren’t capable of processing.” I can witness these parts of you + you can witness these parts of me.

Our ego sees our partners actions as entirely personal. It sees everything our partners do as a reflection of who we are, or who we are not. If we aren’t aware of the ego, we place demands. We punish. We control from a space of fear. We repeat the same cycle of behaviors to our partners that our parents did to us as children.

Our work is to become conscious of our own trauma, our own triggers, our own ego fears. This allows us to hold space for someone else’s.

Conscious relationships are a pathway to healing, where two partners aren’t looking to be happy or ‘completed.’

It’s a relationship practice of creating a safe space of evolution to be seen, heard, authentically expressed
