League of Girls

League of Girls Weekly Empowerment and Leadership classes for Girls. A Lotus Girl is not a bystander, she’s an upstander. Being a girl is hard. Lotus Girls— Stay Calm. Stay Weird!

Weekly Empowerment classes for Girls held at Rising Lotus Yoga, co-founded and taught by Claire Hartley and Anastasia Basil. You expect yourself to be smart, funny, a great friend and a “good girl.”

You’re told to be strong and outspoken but also quiet and polite. With so many expectations at such a young age, our daughters are often swept overboard by big emotions. They feel pressure to be “liked” and accepted by their peers and often lose sight of their own unique identity. This is where Lotus Girls comes in! A class designed to offer young girls an opportunity to express their truth and to find courage to speak up when needed. They’ll learn yogic coping skills and breathing techniques to stay calm and stay centered. Lotus Girls will work together to build a code of living based on yogic principles and the bonds of sisterhood. They’ll have fun role-playing different social situations, learning to embrace diversity in others and in themselves. She stands up for others but above all, she stands up for herself. Stay Centered.

NEW! Lotus Girl Book Reviews. We give a big Thumbs UP to El Deafo by CeCe Bell and a major THUMBS DOWN to The Dork Diaries Series that is often billed as "The Wimpy Kid for Girls." Why do we need Wimpy Kid for girls? Why can't girls just read Wimpy Kid? There's no such thing as the girl version of The Lord of the Rings. Or the girl version of Harry Potter. Wimpy Kid books appeal to kids if they are drawn to its specific style of humor, whether the kid is a boy or a girl or a baby goat makes no difference.
WHY THUMBS DOWN: Dork Diaries perpetuates the negative stereotype that girls are superficial, empty-headed, social butterflies who only care about fashion, celebrities, being cute, cool and popular. There's nothing wrong with "fun" light reading-- but that's not what this is. Here are just a few direct quotes: "You FAT, worthless sk**ks!" And "I hope you're not... http://www.lotusgirl.net/book-reviews-by-lotus-girls

As part of our community pilot program we are giving back to local schools. If your daughter brings a friend into Lotus Girls, 10% of each girl’s tuition will go to YOUR SCHOOL for the duration of their participation in Lotus Girls.
Also, we have one scholarship left for Tuesday's class. If you would like to nominate a girl, please tell us about her!

Change begins with a whisper. We used to just shake our heads at something like this. Now we push back. We not only reject the media stereotype of the image-obsessed girl, we use social media to force change. This magazine reflects the interests of marketers, not the interests of real girls. Inside this very issue is an article titled: "How To Tell Your Parents You Got Your Period." Clearly, they are targeting girls 8-12 and browbeating them with images of underweight female beauty. It's a kind of bullying-- a relentless ambush by marketers whose goal is to teach our daughters how to be deeply dissatisfied with their appearance, and that this deep dissatisfaction is a normal part of being a girl.
"Wake up pretty!" Seriously.
Lotus Girls Classes start Sept 19th.

"I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing."
