In emergency situations, anesthesia must be delivered quickly, safely, and with absolute precision.

Unlike planned procedures, there’s often little time to prepare — which means anesthesiologists must rapidly assess the patient, secure the airway, and stabilize vital functions in real time.

Key priorities in emergency anesthesia:
• Protecting the airway and ensuring oxygen delivery
• Supporting breathing and circulation
• Adjusting medications based on the patient’s condition
• Continuously monitoring vital signs

Every decision is made in seconds, guided by training, experience, and teamwork.

Behind every emergency surgery is an anesthesia team focused on one thing: keeping you safe when it matters most.

ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery), also known as ESR (Enhanced Surgical Recovery), is a comprehensive perioperative care pathway aimed at promoting early recovery for surgical patients by integrating evidence-based practices into patient management. Anesthesiologists play a pivotal role in ERAS, being instrumental in preoperative preparation, intraoperative management, and postoperative care. They frequently administer specialized nerve blocks and multimodal analgesia to enhance recovery, minimize pain, and reduce opioid consumption. G2's top anesthesiologists in the Bay Area excel in performing advanced nerve blocks and have been active participants in ERAS since 2011, significantly contributing to improved patient outcomes and shorter hospital stays. Their expertise in optimizing fluid management, pain control, and patient education is crucial to the success of the ERAS protocol.

Intubation is a medical procedure used to help you breathe during surgery or in certain emergency situations.

It involves placing a small, flexible tube into the windpipe (trachea) through the mouth. This tube keeps the airway open and allows a machine (ventilator) to support breathing while you’re under anesthesia.

Why is it done?
• To ensure a clear and secure airway
• To deliver oxygen safely
• To support breathing when the body is relaxed under anesthesia

You are fully asleep during the process, and most patients are not aware it’s happening.

After surgery, the tube is removed once you’re able to breathe on your own again. Some people may notice a mild sore throat afterward, which usually resolves quickly.

Intubation is a routine and carefully monitored part of many procedures, all focused on keeping you safe.

An epidural is a type of anesthesia commonly used to relieve pain, especially during labor and certain surgical procedures.

It involves placing a small catheter (thin tube) into the space around the spinal nerves in your lower back. Through this catheter, medication is delivered to block pain signals from reaching the brain.

What it does:
• Reduces pain while allowing you to stay awake and alert
• Numbs the lower part of the body
• Can be adjusted as needed for comfort

Epidurals are most commonly associated with childbirth, but they’re also used for some surgeries and pain management.

You may still feel pressure or movement, but the goal is to make the experience much more comfortable.

Epidurals are carefully placed and monitored by trained anesthesia professionals to ensure both safety and effectiveness.

Curious about what happens to your body under anesthesia? 🤔 Here’s a quick breakdown of the process:

Induction: Anesthesia is given through inhalation or IV, quickly helping you relax and drift into a comfortable state.

Pain-Free Experience: It effectively blocks pain signals, so you won’t feel a thing during your procedure.

Muscle Relaxation: It relaxes your muscles, making it easier for the surgeon to perform the procedure.

Altered Awareness: With general anesthesia, you’ll be completely unaware of the procedure, while sedation keeps you drowsy but responsive.

Continuous Monitoring: Your vital signs will be closely watched to ensure everything is going smoothly.

Gentle Recovery: After your procedure, you’ll gradually wake up as the anesthetic leaves your system, often feeling groggy but well cared for.

Post-Procedure Care: Some may experience mild effects like nausea or a sore throat, but these typically fade quickly.

Anesthesia is a safe and essential part of many procedures, designed to keep you comfortable and cared for every step of the way! 🌟 If you have any questions about anesthesia or upcoming procedures, feel free to reach out!

FAQ FRIDAY: How Long Do Nerve Blocks Last?

Nerve blocks can provide targeted pain relief for several hours and sometimes even longer, depending on the type of medication used.

Most single-shot nerve blocks last anywhere from 8 to 24 hours, while certain longer-acting formulations or catheter-based blocks can provide relief for multiple days after surgery.

As the block wears off, sensation and movement gradually return, which is why your care team will give you clear instructions on when to start oral pain medication.
