In early March, many of you donated various items that would be offered to people in Cuba. BTY member and Joy of Yoga 300 hr student, Carmen Aguirre organized this effort, collected the items, sorted them, and flew with them to Cuba to distribute. Below is a note from Carmen.

Dear Breathe Community,

On behalf of myself and the recipients, I want to express our most sincere gratitude for your donations that I delivered to Cuba last weekend.

I was able to take 160 pounds of medicines and medical supplies, toiletries, clothing, school supplies and personal electronics with me to Havana. Due to the fuel crisis that had worsened since I solicited the donations, the plan to visit another province (Cienfuegos) fell apart. During my shortened stay, there was also a collapse of the national electrical grid, which caused a day-long, nationwide blackout. When that happened (and it was the fifth time in several months), it shut down the electric transportation alternatives put in place as the fuel crisis has taken out gas transportation. In other words, it was almost impossible to get anywhere.

I distributed the donations among three dance professors at the National School of the Arts (La ENA), ethical people I have known for decades that are in positions of reaching people who have little access to outside resources. Maria de Los Angeles, who is from an outlying area (those are hardest hit), took the medical supplies to a clinic in her home province of Santa Clara. She also took the school supplies to her students. Isaias, who runs a Havana-based dance and music ensemble with young dancers from Guantanamo, took the bulk of the clothing for the Guantanameros and their families. Jennyselt lives in a deeply impoverished outlying area of Havana where we handed out survival bags of toiletries and over-the-counter medicines to her neighbors. This is where most of the children’s clothing also went.

It was a legit job to organize and distribute goods in Cuba. While need is generally ubiquitous, so too - unfortunately - are efforts to divert donations and resell them on the Black Market. This is why directly donating is important: "la necesidad" there has created a market for donations that negates the intent of those donating them. Work also went into best efforts to reach those in the most need.

I was personally touched by the simple goodness, many of you who I have never met personally, whose names and faces I don't know, and / or who anonymously dropped off bags of goods for me to the front desk. I want to also pass on the many sweet words of thank you from the Cubans who your donations reached -- in person and through calls, text and video messages, both there and once I got back. Many expressions of gratitude. One recipient said succinctly what I heard from many, "it simply means so much to know that people genuinely remember that we are here and are thinking about us."

The dog in the photo is Monty, annoyed that the pre-travel organization of the donations at our home took over the spot where his bed normally is. 🙂

In deep gratitude,
Carmen

Working with clients from different backgrounds, Sway has learned that we are each unique beings and it is natural then, to build our practice in accordance to who we are in body, mind, and spirit. They strongly believe that the mat is only a starting point, over time we bring our practice into the day to day, and from there we ripple out – one little drop at a time; one little seed at a time.

Join Sway for Flow on Tuesdays from 7:15pm-830pm.
