Who wants to play Pickleball?

As a seasoned USTA captain/player with over 30 years of experience, my love for tennis runs deep.

The court, the racket and the ball have been my companions for over 300 USTA matches. Through victories and losses. Yet, the emergence of pickleball, with its simplicity and ease of learning, intrigued me.

So I decided to give it a try:

An act of kindness I'll never forget.

At the 6.0 National championships last week in Surprise, AZ (we came in 2nd!) my Sunnyvale team and I ate dinner at the Longhorn Steak House in Surprise, AZ. 10 of us celebrating our third consecutive trip to the Nationals and honoring our captain Jerry Mackle who retired after this tournament. (I'm taking the reins for the 2024 season which kicks off Friday, February 9.)

Unbeknown to us, a couple in their mid 40s sitting in a booth near us, picked up the entire tab--close to $500 including beer and wine.

The couple left before we could thank them. What a kind, humaneness thing to do.

And a reminder to "pay it forward" to others down on their luck. It can be as simple as saying "Hi" to a stranger, letting someone go in front of you, giving up your seat to someone elderly. Or picking up the tab for someone less fortunate than you.

At age 84, I was the oldest or one of oldest to ever win two matches at a National tennis tournament including a key semifinal match that helped propel our team to the finals.

I'm grateful and blessed to still be active and playing tennis at a championship level. But if I can do it, so can others. My motto: Keep moving "til you can't."

Heading to the USTA National tennis tournament February 2-4 in Surprise, AZ for the 6th time. Third consecutive year with the Sunnyvale 6.0 team. Blessed and grateful to still be playing competitive tennis at age 84. Go Sunnyvale!

In Memoriam to my big brother Jim, 86, who passed away Sunday, March 7 at Mina Yavari's home in Santa Maria, CA. Jim had been ill for several months (not Covid related) but spent five wonderful, happy days with Mina two weeks ago in Las Vegas-- doing what he and she loved best ---playing poker together. She was his loving companion for over 15 years.

Jim's death was sudden but not totally unexpected. He did not trust doctors. He went out the way he wanted. No hospital stay. No tubes or machines to keep him alive. RIP, my brother. You're in a good place now.

My dad taught me how to fish at age 6 growing up as a youngster in Whitewater, KS--a small farming town, population 495. 64 years later, I’m still fishing and love teaching others how to fish, especially children.

Recently, I and Pete Sasur of the Bay Area Sportfishers (BASF) had the pleasure of teaching an entire family-- Siraj Syed, his wife and two kids age 7 and 10 at the Campbell Perc Ponds located in Campbell, CA where I live.

Originally from Chennai, India--Siraj and his family had never fished before but he wanted to get his kids out of the house and “off of their Xboxes and cell phones.” Fishing was also something his entire family could enjoy doing together.

Teaching Siraj and family to fish brought back many fond memories as I spent two years in Chennai (formerly Madras) as a Peace Corps teacher many years ago. Chennai is also where I married my beautiful Anglo Indian wife of 52 years, Gloria.

I taught Gloria how to fish and our wonderful daughter Charm at age 6 who goes fishing with me today as often as she can.
