“I used to approach the field of psychology thinking that people are innately good,” Ayelet Schafir-Hirshfeld, an Israeli-American therapist who has been working in California, said. “We have this question in philosophy. We have all of these philosophers arguing about human nature. And it changed my view. I started feeling that I’ve been very naive, that I didn’t see it before or that I was blind to it. “Saving face » « menboku o tomatsu » is a concept used in Japanese & Chinese cultures, prohibiting the shaming of the family in cases such as attempted su***de, or having mental issues. Instead value is heavily placed on discretion, to the point of banning the individual who shamed the family from the entire social order. Unfortunately this limits the ability of individuals to reach out, outside of the family, for help as they will “lose face” « menboku o ushinau » for themselves & for their families & be outcast from their social context. This paradoxically leads community members towards culturally sanctioned su***de, « seppuku.»
