ABOUT "Mindful Kindful YOUniversity" ~
Sound Healing / Drum Circles / Retreats

Mindful ~ Kindful ~ Peaceful: The moment to moment practices to transform our lives into harmony with our true nature. Flowing and Growing Through Life: Everything is energy and energy is transforming. Season gently transforming to the next season, daylight into the darkness of night, windy storms settling into stillness. A fallen leaf eventually becomes part of the earth, a fallen pine cone becomes food, or a seed becomes a tree or a flower. What may seem like the end is actually the becoming of something new. Energy becoming. Who have you become? Who are you becoming? Life has a way of bringing up this question again and again as we confront both daily challenges and life-changing events. What if who you are becoming, or hope to become, is also about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so you can discover, or re-discover, your true nature and how you want to show up in life no matter what obstacles may appear - in health, relationships, or other life circumstances. "It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey." ~Wendell Berry

The word university is derived from the Latin word universus, meaning “whole, entire.” Mindful Kindful YOUniversity (MK YOU) is the study of YOU and your whole-being on this journey of life. Learn and practice how to navigate and flow through life moment to moment in a healthy, balanced, and positive way for mental and physical health and well-being. Your well-being is the most important education you will ever receive in the school of life. Learn pragmatic, simple evidence-based practices to navigate the ups and downs of daily living and positively support you in responding to life as it is — the good stuff, the tough stuff, all of it — with grace and the skills to be mindful, kindful, and peaceful. Experience for yourself how these practices and essential life skills of mindfulness, heartfulness, supported by nature and sound energy, can be the foundation for greater strength, resilience, health, and happiness. I would be honored to be your guide.

Our country is hurting right now.
Many of us are carrying grief, fear, anger, heartbreak, and deep nervous system stress as we witness escalating violence and brutality — toward immigrant communities and those being killed while trying to help.

In moments like this, it’s important to say clearly:
✨ YOUniversity offerings are not here to fix everything in one evening
✨ It’s not here to bypass this deep systemic shift of in our daily lives.

❤️ I’m here to offer respite, grounding, and ways to be with what’s here — together. And through proven ways that do have the potential to help alleviate suffering- body, mind, and spirit.

🪘 Tomorrow (Monday): Rhythm YOUniversity – Mindful Drumming (Arroyo Grande 1:45pm)
A gentle, nonverbal, embodied somatic approach to process emotions when words fall short.
Drumming helps regulate the nervous system, release held stress, and move energy — without needing to explain or perform how you’re feeling.
(This is a recurring class - “drop ins” welcome) No experience needed. I’ll bring the drums.

🎶 Tuesday: Sound Journey – “Anxiety Relief” (Los Osos 6:30pm)
This is not a promise that anxiety completely disappears in these challenging times. We will still be walking through these chaotic times for some time.
It is an invitation into deep rest, nervous system settling, and tools you can take with you — held in a supportive, compassionate community. These opportunities to put down what’s heavy and time to reset is essential.

💛 And a reminder:
If you’re needing more intimate, personalized support, I also offer 1:1 Sound Treatment sessions with a grief- and trauma-informed lens — a quieter, deeply held space for processing and integration.

You are not alone.
You are allowed to rest and care about the world.
Community care is part of how we keep going.

“The heart is a thousand-stringed instrument that can only be tuned with Love.”-Hafiz
Today’s heart shapes discoveries include one on the flooring of an antique piano harp, another on the back of the piano harp, a dulcimer catching sunset rays of golden light, and a cloud… beautiful reminders of the good things that show up in daily life…
Soon after I received a call from someone asking if she could donate a psaltery instrument (a harp-like stringed instrument similar to to a zither).

I haven’t shared a heart discovery in a while… this one definitely warmed my heart. An itty bitty piece of peanut skin (or whatever you call that) in my little dish of peanuts that I put out for my itty-bitty birdies each morning - the tiny birdies. My little joy bundles that love to make peanut discoveries in the little dish each morning. It’s a reciprocal relationship. I bring joy to them and they bring joy to me!
Did you find it? ❤️

Mmmm….

Mmmm….

I recall someone saying to me
'You need to let go.'
I looked at them with a confused expression and said
'I don't know how to let go.'
We were sitting on a hill overlooking the ocean at the time.
I was feeling very emotionally overwhelmed and crying a lot.

'I'm just trying to keep my head above water at the moment'
I replied.

'Close your eyes, imagine yourself there in the ocean and instead of fighting to stay afloat, breathe out, stop resisting. Let the water take you'

'But I will drown!'

'You are already drowning in your emotions.
Just for a minute, imagine your body relaxing in the beautiful blue water and see what happens. We are safe here, we are not out there. You can do this.'

As I exhaled a long breath out, I imagined my body rather than struggling to keep my head above water, relaxing into the deep blue and with another long breath out, I found the tension in my mind dropping, my tight jaw of resistance slackening, and in my imagination, it was so much easier to breathe underwater.

When we blend visualisaton with intentional breathing, it can help us 'Let go'

The ocean blue might not be for you, but lying down on a soft forest bed and allowing yourself to sink into the ferns or the moss is also a lovely visual to imagine.

Choose the let go visual that suits you and exhale into it willingly.

Blessings

In gratitude to Linda Martin ( ) my soul song sister for this collaborative endeavor that we will be offering every month - as music medicine for ourselves and for the community to put down, what’s heavy and lift our hearts, spirits, and one another. We’ve had a few last-minute cancellations so there’s a few new openings for our special event this evening - Linda Martin from and I are collaborating on this unique gathering - a call to reconnect with what truly matters: community, presence, and joy through our collective voices. Through simple, heartfelt songs of peace, love, compassion, unity, and healing, we create space to comfort the heart, uplift the spirit, deepen connection, and let our souls shine a little brighter.

Music is a universal language that transcends culture, perspective, and life experience. It offers a joyful, nourishing way to slow down, create beauty, and contribute to a more harmonious world. Together, we rise above the noise and step into joy.

“Rhythm YOUniversity” - our weekly mindful drumming class is tomorrow, and every Monday at the Arroyo Grande Community Center (1:45-2:45). We kicked off the series last week and it was amazing! You’re welcome to come as a”drop in”! Mindful drumming helps by creating a focused, meditative state that reduces stress, releases pent-up emotions, and boosts brain function, improving mental clarity, emotional regulation, and physical well-being through rhythmic, sensory engagement that synchronizes the brain and body, offering benefits like improved immunity, focus, and social connection, especially in group settings.
These facilitated experiences offer empowering, engaging, and trauma-sensitive activities based on the HealthRHYTHMS evidence based protocol.
*No experience is needed.

*Drums are provided.

The onslaught of horrific news is taking a toll on so many of us. Please be sure to take care of yourself and your mental health during these heavily charged political times.

Thich Nhat Hanh, the revered Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, poet, peace activist, and global spiritual leader often called the “father of mindfulness,” once shared: “Someone asked me, ‘Aren’t you worried about the state of the world?’ I allowed myself to breathe and then I said, ‘What is most important is not to allow your anxiety about what happens in the world to fill your heart. If your heart is filled with anxiety, you will get sick, and you will not be able to help.’”

Social media can feel especially difficult right now because of the uninvited news stories and posts. And yet, I still love connecting with friends, and there are positive and inspiring things there, too. One such source has been the Walk for Peace, which began in late October in Texas and will continue through February.
The monks walking for peace continue an ancient tradition. For centuries, monks have walked in times of unrest—not to accuse, but to calm. Peace has always been practiced quietly, through presence and steady steps. Sometimes peace does not need words. It only needs to be walked.

If you’re unfamiliar with them, I invite you to check them out on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Their posts are genuinely grounding and hopeful.
managing media exposure, focusing on what you can control, nurturing positive, social connections, and engaging in self-care, all matter more than ever. Check out our three sound bath opportunities this weekend listed under Events or go to our website calendar. Sending love ❤️ Dee

My Story

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity offers Mindfulness-based Social-Emotional Learning Enrichment Programs which provide a rich experience for all ages through learning and engaging in practices of mindfulness and movement grounded in science and backed by research to support mental and physical health and well-being.

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity equips and teaches children, teens, and adults HOW to cultivate the inner resources, or “superpowers” for reducing stress and experiencing more balance, resilience, and overall well-being by integrating evidence-based strategies and practices of mindfulness, movement & yoga, and social emotional learning to develop the essential life skills of emotional intelligence, or “Sm’Heart skills” — the essential education for responding more skillfully to life in the 21st Century!

These positive habits will transform, not only inner peace and happiness, but also our social dynamics at school, at home, at work, and in the community! These are skills for life!
