Happy Skin Care Awareness Month! Nearly every patient can benefit from microneedling! In our 20's we begin to lose about 1% of the collagen in our skin annually. Therefore, we need to do something to cause collaneogenesis, which is new collagen formation, to combat this loss from aging. The Skin Pen microneedling device used here at Anew Aesthetics in Los Osos delivers precise micro injuries to the skin which, in response, causes new collagen formation thus improving tone, tightening, and texture of the skin. Pro-Tip- Stay hydrated!
Internal and external hydration delays tissue breakdown and can actually aid in tissue repair. Two products I use daily both professionally and personally are VaniCream Ointment and VaniCream Moisturizing Cream. These can be purchased OTC at a great price point $15-20/large container. They are free of fragrances, dyes, parabens, formaldehyde, and lanolin. They are all around dermatologically safe for nearly any patient, such as the tiniest 3-month-old eczematous patient, to psoriatic, allergic dermatitis or acne prone patients. The moisturizer is extremely hydrating, yet does not feel weighty once applied to the skin and can be used whole body. It is great for people like me who wash their hands constantly. The ointment is a great moisturizing skin barrier that I use on my patients post biopsy, other skin procedures, and even post lip filler. This one is great for those who want to prevent cracking of the skin due to dyshidrotic eczema or cold sores. It has a similar consistency to that of Aquaphor, but without the lanolin some patients are sensitive to. Lastly, internal hydration is key to a healthy body which includes your skin. Having an adequate intake of water helps hydrate the skin from the inside out, which allows cells to remove toxins from the body and transport nutrients appropriately. So, let's all stay hydrated!
