Physician members of the New Mexico Medical Society (NMMS), many of whom earned their medical degrees or completed residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, are excited about the plans to double the size of the school. The lack of timely, quality medical care in New Mexico is a serious challenge with far-reaching impacts on community health.
"We applaud the Governor, the legislature, and UNM Health Sciences leadership for their vision in expanding the medical school and opening the new critical care tower." said Annie Jung, Executive Director, NMMS. "Equally important is the need to create a business environment that encourages UNM-trained graduates to stay and practice in New Mexico. This includes reforming medical malpractice laws to reduce liability costs, increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates and improving claims processing, and eliminating the gross receipts tax on medical services. These steps are essential to retaining talent and strengthening healthcare access statewide."
