The Society for Integrative Oncology is a non-profit, multidisciplinary organization established in 2003 to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative healthcare to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. The Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization founded in 2003 for health professionals committed to the study and application of comp

lementary therapies and botanicals for cancer patients. It provides a convenient forum for presentation, discussion and peer review of evidence-based research and treatment modalities in the discipline known as integrative medicine. It makes a clear distinction between "alternative" or unproven and "complementary" or tested useful therapies in cancer care.Integrative oncology is a seamless rapprochement of interventions that benefit cancer patients. Because a constantly growing number of cancer patients throughout the world turn to both alternative and complementary therapies as part of their cancer treatment plan, it is essential that oncologists have ready access to information about research, existing treatment programs, and both the benefits and dangers of the wide range of complementary therapies available today. Pre Conference Workshop:Synergy in Cancer Care: Strategies for Dietary Supplement Assessment in Patients with Cancer

📅 Monday, October 27, 2025 10:00-11:45am

Patients with cancer are increasingly looking to incorporate dietary supplement use for mitigation of adverse effects or for their purported anti-cancer properties. Dietary supplements, when combined with cancer therapy, should be evaluated to determine potential risks or interactions by informed health care providers. We propose to conduct a 105-minute workshop to advise clinicians and pharmacists on strategies that will improve decision-making regarding assessment of safety and integration of dietary supplements in cancer care. The workshop will commence with background information and firsthand experience provided by oncology clinicians regarding the use of dietary supplements concurrently with cancer therapy. Following the introduction, experienced integrative medicine pharmacists will discuss the utilization of various tools and resources for assessing the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements. Following this didactic portion of the workshop, the presenters will facilitate breakout sessions where participants will be assigned cases and be asked to identify drug-supplement interactions and any supplement-disease or supplement-laboratory concerns. The interactive portion of the workshop will be followed by a discussion session.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, the attendee should be able to:

1.Discuss evidence-based approaches to evaluating dietary supplement safety and efficacy in the cancer population.
2.Assess databases and literature to identify potential concerns related to dietary supplement use in a specific patient.
3.Interpret information from multiple sources regarding potential interactions between dietary supplements and cancer therapies while integrating patient-specific wishes and needs
4.Provide recommendations on specific dietary supplement use in a patient with cancer utilizing institution-specific ways of communication

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this 105-minute workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize the Role of Oncology Acupuncture in Integrative Cancer Care • Understand how acupuncture is effectively integrated at leading cancer centers like Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). • Appreciate the evolving status of oncology acupuncture as a subspecialty, supported by professional groups like SIO’s Acupuncture Special Interest Group (SIG).

2. Understand Foundational Oncology Concepts and Safety Essentials • Summarize basic cancer biology, staging, and treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapies) relevant to acupuncture. • Identify typical side effects (pain, neuropathy, hot flashes) caused by general cancer treatments and incorporate risk management strategies for immunocompromised or high-risk patients.

3. Apply Major Oncology Practice Guidelines to Acupuncture • Reference and interpret key cancer care recommendations from ASCO, SIO, and NCCN for integrative oncology. • Integrate these guidelines into evidence-based acupuncture protocols for symptom management.

4. Implement Practical Safety and Risk-Management Strategies • Utilize essential lab values (platelet counts, neutrophils) and imaging cues (bone metastases) for safe needling. • Practice infection control measures and appropriate referral processes within an interdisciplinary setting.

5. Engage in Interactive, Hands-On Breakout Sessions • Collaborate in small groups, guided by DFCI’s practicing oncology acupuncturists, to apply guideline-based safety and symptom management protocols. • Discuss strategies for integrating acupuncture across the oncology continuum—from active treatment through survivorship and palliative care.
