Reducing the financial barriers that prevent access for so many individuals is a critical step in furthering mental health and wellness in our communities. There is often a lack of in network providers due to reimbursement rates or the coverage provided leaves individuals with costs that they cannot afford. The Mental Health Insurance Reform Task Force is tackling this issue in Kentucky addressing issues regarding parity in reimbursement rates which leave people struggling to find providers who are in network. Please consider signing their petition or sharing your story with them.

It is critical that we create safe spaces for people to be able to share their experiences and their struggles. This means people not feeling the need to hide what they are dealing with just to preserve a certain image that they have. Therapy and counseling offer that space to people but it is important that we work to create a culture that allows people to be vulnerable. I want to applaud all the efforts that Bethany Balcer of Racing Louisville has taken to further that conversation using her social media and the platform she has there.

In recognition of National Counseling Awareness month, I thought it important to continue the discussion around ending the stigma of mental healthcare and therapy. This seems especially critical in light of recent headlines related to Autism and the misinformation that continues to be spread. While approximately one in five adults experience mental health issues each year, only 46% of those individuals seek treatment. We have to continue efforts to eliminate barriers and create safe spaces for people to talk about these issues.
