Simulations are a key part of learning to become a pediatrician no matter where you do your training, but only University of Louisville School of Medicine and Norton Children's are there Derby themed simulation competitions!

Last week our Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program invited fellows from the University of Dayton, Riley Children's Foundation and UAB Medicine to join our Fellows for our annual Simulation Derby. They participated in a variety of competition including an escape room, trivia and timed procedures and cases.

Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty and third year fellows served as judges.

APPD LEAD is a nationally recognized leadership development program designed for pediatric educators aspiring to grow as leaders in academic medicine and medical education. Over the course of nine months, participants engage with experienced program directors, educators and national pediatric leaders while developing skills in organizational leadership, competency-based curriculum development, faculty development, program administration and scholarship.

Congratulations to Dr. Allie Lyle on being selected to serve as co-chair of the Academic Pediatric Association Ethics Special Interest Group (SIG)! 👏

The APA Ethics SIG brings together pediatricians and pediatric experts dedicated to advancing the integration of ethics into clinical care, research, advocacy and medical education. Through initiatives including ethics programming at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting and mentorship opportunities for trainees, the group plays an important role in shaping thoughtful, compassionate pediatric practice.

We are proud to see Dr. Lyle’s leadership and expertise recognized on a national level as she helps guide important conversations in pediatric ethics and education.

Dr. Aaron Calhoun recently presented at the 2026 Safar Symposium, where he delivered a talk titled “The International Liaison Council on Simulation: Charting the Future of Healthcare Simulation Research.” 👏

A leader in pediatric critical care education and simulation-based learning, Dr. Calhoun continues to advance conversations around innovation, collaboration and the future of healthcare simulation research on an international stage.

Congratulations to our own Dr. Aaron Calhoun on receiving the 2026 UofL Trustees Award!

This prestigious honor recognizes faculty members who make an extraordinary impact on students through teaching, mentorship and dedication to student success. As a professor in our Division of Critical Care Medicine and an attending physician at Norton Children's Hospital, Dr. Calhoun is known for creating engaging, psychologically safe learning environments that inspire students, residents and fellows to move beyond the “what” and understand the “why” behind patient care.

From the classroom to the PICU, his passion for teaching and mentorship continues to shape the next generation of pediatric health care leaders. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and grateful for the lasting impact he has on our learners and our department.

Dr. Deanna Todd Tzanetos has been elected co-chair lead for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society conference committee, beginning next year.
