March Grand Rounds featured a dynamic lineup of speakers and meaningful discussions across key areas of pediatric care and professional practice.

We began with a deep dive into short bowel syndrome: past, present, and future with Dr. Charles Vanderpool, followed by building blocks for a strong safety culture with Dr. Vicki Montgomery and Dr. Kelly Johnson. We then welcomed Dr. John C. Carlson for the 4th Annual Dr. Duncan R. MacMillan Lectureship on the science of science communication, and closed out the month with the 14th Annual Dr. Thomas Pinkstaff Memorial Lectureship, where Dr. Maria H. Rahmandar presented on practical skills for su***de prevention.

Thank you to all of our speakers for sharing their expertise and helping advance education, patient care, and innovation across our department.

Last Week, members of the Department of Pediatrics attended the Society of Critical Care Medicine 2026 Congress in Chicago, joining colleagues from across the country to share knowledge and advance critical care practice.

We are especially proud of Critical Care Fellow Sam Pouncey for presenting his research, “A Rare Case of Early VA ECMO Support for Metformin Ingestion.” His work highlights the innovation, clinical expertise, and academic engagement that define our training programs.

Today, the Department of Pediatrics is proud to celebrate National Doctors’ Day—a time to recognize the physicians who care for our patients with expertise, compassion, and dedication.

Our pediatricians do more than treat illness. They build trust with families, guide teams through uncertainty, and remain a steady presence when it matters most. Their work reflects both excellence in medicine and a deep commitment to the children and communities we serve.

We are grateful for all that you do today and every day. Thank you for making a difference.

The early days of parenthood can feel overwhelming, but no family should have to navigate them alone. 💙

At the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics, pediatricians are redefining care by strengthening support for both babies and mothers through a growing focus on breastfeeding medicine. With innovative training programs and a commitment to compassionate, evidence-based guidance, they are helping families feel confident, supported and empowered from day one.
