As we gear up for Give for Good Louisville, let us share some fun history about the clock and bell tower. We hope that you will support our efforts to finish the restoration of this Cave Hill landmark on Thursday!

In 1892, Cave Hill Cemetery proudly purchased a new clock from the E. Howard Watch Company (New York) for $565. The clock featured faces on all four sides of the 180-foot tall clocktower, so it could be viewed from all directions. A 2,000-pound bell from the bell manufacturer Kaye & Co. (Louisville) was also purchased for $450.

Over the years, the clock has undergone several updates:

⏰ In 1965, the original wooden clock hands and glass clock faces were replaced with aluminum features, and the weight-driven clockworks were replaced by an electrical motor. The original clock mechanism required the clock to be wound by hand on a weekly basis under exceedingly precarious conditions. Workers could only access the mechanism with a steep ladder through a narrow trap door for maintenance and adjustments.

⏰ In August 2000, the clock suffered from previously undetected structural damage inside the clock tower, causing pieces of a wooden beam to fall onto the clock mechanism, breaking the glass and damaging the clockwork. The clock faces and hands were updated, and the operation of the clock was motorized to eliminate the need for hand-winding, although adjustments for clock accuracy still needed to be performed manually.

In 2015, the clock stopped keeping accurate time due to its age and fell silent.
