Sensory play doesn’t have to be messy or complicated! Boil some leftover pasta, let it cool, and watch your little one explore—warm, wet, sticky, cold… so many textures in one simple activity!

Got a kiddo who’s hesitant about textures or new foods? Playing with food away from the table or high chair takes the pressure off! Try adding their favorite toy as a “taste tester”—sometimes, watching their toy interact makes it easier for them to join in. Who knew spaghetti could be so much fun?

Think your child has trouble focusing? Or been told they have low attention span? Here’s a game-changer: A child’s age-appropriate attention span is just their age ± 1-2 minutes! That means a 4-year-old focusing for 2-6 minutes is right on track. Let’s give them (and ourselves) more credit! Want tips to boost attention span? Stay tuned!

What zone are you in? 🔴🟢🟡🔵

One of my favorite ways to teach kids about emotions, how to identify them, and how to work through self-regulation is with the *Zones of Regulation* curriculum! It simplifies emotions into a fun and approachable way for kids to understand and talk about their feelings.

Want to start practicing self-regulation at home? Try modeling your emotions and coping strategies: “I’m feeling really tired today (emotion), so I’m going to do 10 jumping jacks to wake myself up (coping skill)!” You might be surprised at how quickly your kids pick up on it and start identifying their own emotions without any prompting.

Do you have a picky eater? •• Here are 5 tips you can start implementing TODAY to increase acceptance of non preferred foods!

1. Include them in meal planning and grocery shopping
2. Talk objectively about the food vs subjectively (aka: facts vs opinions)
3. No more “just try it” “one more bite” “I love it so I know you will love it” etc - your job as a parent is to serve the food and be close by for safety, the child’s job is to choose when, how and how much they want to eat
4. Make it fun! Act like animals taking different bites, use unique / odd utensils like toothpicks, tongs, etc
5. Let them serve your, scooping / placing the food on your plate - waiter/waitress

If you think your kiddo count benefit from direct 1:1 intervention for picky eating or texture aversions, call today to schedule an evaluation! Jennifer Metts

Children (and adults) can often become dysregulated due to various reasons such as their environment being too loud, strong smell(s) in a room, bright lights, needing to run, jump or move but can’t, being forced to finger paint, or even unwanted textures from foods or clothing. Here are some common signs you may see if your child is trying to communicate being dysregulated.

💡Like the Moro Reflex, the ATNR is considered one of the two main reflexes that are essential for survival in the first few months of life. The ATNR is one of the first eye-hand coordination movements the baby experiences. Crawling and creeping are extremely important in the integration of the ATNR at the appropriate time (this is why crawling is still a milestone in my book, *cough* CDC *cough*). Check out the list of signs/symptoms of a retained ATNR on the last slide and contact me with any further questions or concerns.
