Have you seen the weather? It's hot! While the recent heat advisory may be lifting, our region is still anticipating significantly warm temperatures in the coming days. Prolonged exposure to heat can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly. We encourage everyone to prioritize their well-being during this period: stay well-hydrated, limit extended outdoor activities, and please check in on friends, family, and neighbors who may need assistance. Your health and safety are paramount, so spend some time in the shade and bask in the joy of indoor activities like we do at Buena Vida! ❤

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Did you know 1 in 6 older adults worldwide experiences abuse each year, yet only about 1 in 24 cases are reported?
Elder abuse can take many forms—physical harm, emotional mistreatment, financial exploitation, neglect—and it can happen anywhere: in homes, care facilities, or community settings.

At Buena Vida, we’re committed to standing against all forms of elder abuse and ensuring our members are always treated with dignity and respect.

Here’s how you can help:
🤝 Connect: Check in regularly with older family members and neighbors

🗣️ Learn the signs: Find warning signs on the NCEA’s site (ncea.acl.gov)

📞 Report concerns: Contact your state's Adult Protective Services office if you suspect someone is being victim of elder abuse. For Kentucky, it's 877-597-2331.

Junio es el Mes de Concientización sobre el Abuso a Personas Mayores.
¿Sabías que 1 de cada 6 personas mayores en el mundo sufre algún tipo de abuso cada año, pero solo se reporta aproximadamente 1 de cada 24 casos?

The Department for Medicaid Services and the Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities have developed a new 1915(c) Home and Community Based Services waiver. The Community Health for Improved Lives and Development, or CHILD, waiver aims to keep individuals age 21 and younger with complex, multi-system needs safe, healthy, and as independent as possible within their communities and families. DMS is accepting public comment on the proposed application as part of the federal approval process for a new waiver. Comments can be submitted between June 16 and July 15, 2025. What happens when the support someone relies on is no longer there?

Proposed cuts to Medicaid could take away critical services like Adult Day Health Care, in-home care, daily check-ins, and more. These services are essential supports that help people like our members stay healthy, stay connected to their community, and remain independent.

We can’t let that be the future. Medicaid matters—to keep the chair filled, the domino game going, and compassionate care within reach.

¿Qué pasa cuando el apoyo en el que alguien confía deja de estar disponible?

Los recortes financieros propuestos a Medicaid podrían eliminar servicios esenciales como el cuidado de salud diurno para adultos, la atención domiciliaria, las visitas diarias, entre otros. Estos servicios son apoyos fundamentales que ayudan a personas como nuestros miembros a mantenerse saludables, conectados con su comunidad y a conservar su independencia.

No podemos permitir que ese sea el futuro. Medicaid importa—para que la silla no quede vacía, el juego de dominó continúe y el cuidado de calidad siga estando al alcance.

Another day enjoying the warmth of the beautiful community we have. We are always grateful for the opportunity to see our members happy, and honored to be part of the care that helps make that possible.

Much of this is only possible thanks to programs like Medicaid—programs that are now under serious review.
