When kids are struggling with anxiety, allowing them to experience their emotions can help them learn that they are harmless, and they can manage them on their own. Often we feel pulled to step in and do something to help relieve their anxiety. While well intentioned, this sends the message that children can’t handle the situation on their own, and it helps them to avoid the emotions all together. By making supportive statements and not accommodating for anxious behaviors we can teach children they can handle big emotions on their own (even if it takes some time at first). Remember, this is not a magic spell, and these statements must be made over and over again before children begin to believe it for themselves.
