Motivation comes from within, as does love. The little kid in you needs to know that they are safe, seen, and happy in your care. Tap into your inner child and show them some love. It'll radiate out and regulate in, and that's a win-win. 💛

Hey y'all, Happy Wednesday! 💛

Did y'all see Janet Jackson (i.e. Ms. Jackson, if ya nasty) on the AMAs? She looked very hydrated, very humble & immensely hopeful for what is to come. It reminded me of how moved I was as a kid hearing and dancing to her song "Rhythm Nation".

A careless freedom. A hopeful present and future. A deep recognition. An enhanced level of enjoyment. Powerful. That's rhythm nation to me. However (COMMA) when life lifes, the rhythm can feel distant and the rumination can move its way on in interrupting the rhythm that offered freedom and safety.

Find your rhythm again and rejoin the rhythm nation. Take time to reconnect with yourself and your highest moment of safety and freedom. Divest and unplug from the rumination nation, and move to your own rhythm...move onward, forward. Trust yourself and take steps to move.

Don't overthink your thoughts. Take action, trust your judgment, find your rhythm and flow.

We are a part of the rhythm nation.

May has been busy. Full. Filled with work--of course--and family/framily fun.

I fascinated with fascinators at Churchill Downs. I socialized with colleagues, Sorors, friends & family. I celebrated Mother's Day with my Momma and nieces. I found different meaning and embraced the role of Momtie. 💕 I cowboyed up with Mrs. Carter and my Beyhive Besties. I met up with a cousin who I've spoken to for years and found we have so much more in common, as fellow therapists looking to pursue our passions while giving back to community and finding balance.

It has been a great month. A month of love, connection and reflection. It has offered opportunities that I've both graciously accepted & respectfully declined. May has offered room for me to see some things that were missed.

I look forward to the second half of 2025...be on the lookout (BOLO) because there are some things on store 💛

I find myself feeling less anxiety and more peace in my role as a presenter. If you know me know me, you know I'm an anxious introvert, and public speaking can dysregulate my nervous system. Before I left out to present, my husband unknowingly activated my parasympathetic nervous system with beautiful words of affirmation. I breathe & received...

Today, I had the opportunity to present to students at Sullivan University through the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (SUCOPHS), where I serve as the campus therapist. A student org asked, and I delivered. I'm always grateful for the ask and happy to interface with the student body. A student shared that my presentation reminded her regulatory responses she forgot she had in her emotional toolbox from her previous therapist.

Motivating moments and mission-oriented milestones.

Today was a full day. A day of work fellowship with community. The UofL Women's Alumni Council partnered with the West End Women's Collaborative (WEWC) on their Paint Your Legacy initiative. WEWC's mission is to "create and sustain artistic, peaceful spaces in the West End of Louisville." They are a moment and a movement. Check them out if you're local to Lou, KY.

Eleven (11) women came together to paint their own individual brick that will be laid within the Peace Labyrinth at the ELA House, which is an inclusive gathering space focused on the spirit of connection and creativity. Three (3) of us there were members of the Council--my fellow leaders, our Social Media Correspondent, Treasurer & myself as the Chair. The Council's Social Media Correspondent will share the other photos, so if you'd like to see them, follow our Council's page.

I sat with my brick for a bit. Longer than most others. The brick evoked anxiety for me. I am NOT creative. I was the 6 year old kid who (out of insecurity and perfectionism) experienced emotional breakdown for coloring outside of the lines and negotiated with my kindergarten classmate to cut out an apple for me because I couldn't cut precisely (my protection for their steady hand 🤣).

My Council colleague sat beside as I proceeded with offering myself affirmations, self-kindness and compassion; and humor ( ) in preparation for liberation. My inner perfectionist tried to creep out and take over. I had to shut her *arse (y'all know I cuss, but my Momma follows me and she's very cutesy, very demure, very mindful, so...I'm being mindful) DOWN! I took a breath, and I proceeded on.

I made mistakes. It didn't turn out how I wanted, yet it turned out how it wanted, and I love it. I look forward to the notification that my imperfectly perfect brick is placed.

I love my Council. I love my community. I love my city. I love my fellow Council members. I love fellowshipping (with intention). I love my imperfections. I love my flaws. And, I love my brick.

Thank you, Mariel & WEWC, for answering your calling to create spaces to strengthen our community. 💛

So, let's chat about this...

We all have survival skills; however, when we've experienced trauma, we can find ourselves frozen in survival mode. It's like the Neutral gear in the car. The car is on, yet it can take move until the gear has been shifted.

Healing from traumatic experiences can take time, but when the healing journey has begun, you can see, feel and know a noticeable difference. You shifted to thriving mode.

Yet, life lifes...and we have another adverse experience to take place, and we must survive. Your sympathetic nervous system is activated. Because you've survived before, healed from past trauma(s) and gained the tools to thrive, your parasympathetic nervous system can and will activate slowly but surely. You survived and can resume thriving.

It's not a regression. It's a moment. You have the awareness and the tools. Tap in & Thrive on!
