Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) uses continuous intravenous infusion to achieve hypnosis, analgesia, and immobility without the use of inhalational anesthetics. This is most often accomplished by using propofol as the hypnotic agent and an opioid, such as remifentanil or fentanyl, for analgesia.

To access the benefits of TIVA in certain clinical scenarios, anesthesiologists must understand the relevant safety considerations when mixing drugs for TIVA.

Some trained and certified anesthesiologists choose to apply their anesthesiology expertise in other professions, including as researchers, medical or pharmaceutical consultants, hospital administrators, and health technology experts. At the same time, practicing anesthesiologists may assume non-clinical responsibilities. In fact, some of these responsibilities may be increasing. This increase is a subject of active debate within the profession, and there are strong arguments in favor of and against anesthesiologists assuming non-clinical responsibilities.

Benzodiazepines are commonly given perioperatively for sleep and anxiolysis and intraoperatively in conjunction with other anesthetics and analgesics. However, some data suggest that, when possible, avoiding benzodiazepines could reduce the risk of postoperative delirium, which is a significant concern following anesthesia and surgery.

Jet ventilation (JV) is a specialized technique frequently employed during surgeries involving the airway. In anesthesiology, maintaining effective ventilation is critical for patient safety during procedures. By providing high-velocity bursts of oxygen into the airway, JV ensures that patients are breathing enough oxygen even while undergoing intensive surgeries under anesthesia where standard oxygenation and ventilation practices do not work.

In the U.S., aspiring anesthesiologists follow a well-defined path, typically completing medical school, a residency in anesthesiology, and additional fellowship training if desired. However, for various reasons—such as career changes, relocation, or different educational backgrounds—some medical professionals may seek an alternate entry pathway into anesthesiology.
