Yesterday I did something I have feared for a long time. I fell **hard** during a run.

I turned a corner and hit some uneven sidewalk and went flying. All of the things I had on me went flying as well; keys, earbuds, wallet, phone… went in every direction.

I’ve tripped running many times but this was by far my most spectacular spill. I immediately popped up off the ground and looked all around to see who witnessed my airborne stunt.

Shockingly, the street was quiet, no cars, no pedestrians, no one lurking (or laughing) in the windows. I can’t believe I got away with it without witnesses. I was not unscathed, however, and my bleeding knee gave me away for the rest of the (hobbling) run home.

Here’s the thing: We all fall. ALL THE TIME.

Sometimes we fall and no one is watching. Sometimes we fall in front of an audience. Either way it hurts the same, we bleed the same, and we pop up and keep going. Sometimes we lay there for a minute and sometimes it takes awhile to get up.

But we get up.

This is Recovery Café Louisville. We fall (publicly or privately). Our hurt visible to everyone… and we get back up and keep moving forward. And we do it together.

Come, be a part of our community; we gather on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. (Schedule below)

I tend to move this particular mug out of the way in all the non-December months. It just doesn’t seem right to drink out of it in May. Today was different. It’s gray and rainy and muggy and in my reach for a mug I had the thought that my coffee would taste especially good with a little joy and a little peace. I need both today.

I think more than a few of us could use joy and peace in the other eleven months. This is my hope for all of us… and Recovery Cafe: a bit of joy and a bit of peace spending time with each other, support for our fears and failures, and cheers for our successes in all the months. That is my non-holiday wish.

Come, be a part of our community; we gather on Monday’s with a Recovery Circle at 10:30-11:30am with a group workout at 6pm and Wednesday’s, 5-8pm with a workout at 6pm, and Recovery Circle from 7-8pm.

We deserve the joy and peace (and coffee) now!

Love and recovery,
JD Dotson

We need your help! Mayor Greenberg’s proposed budget to Metro Council eliminates House of Ruth from the city’s External Agency Funding. The resulting loss is $17,500 for our supportive housing for people impacted by HIV. To get these funds back in the city budget, we have to advocate with Metro Council. Please tell Metro Council that House of Ruth and the services we provide are crucial to Louisville!

Click the link to contact your Council District Representative before May 23 and submit your comments on the “External Agency” budget: https://tinyurl.com/3cw878et

If you’re not sure what to say, here’s a sample comment:

House of Ruth provides critical housing and HIV support services in the community. Each year, House of Ruth helps more than 550 individuals and their families in Jefferson County with rental assistance, deposits, utilities, TARC, food, other basic needs. Support from the City of Louisville helps to continue these services and keep medically vulnerable citizens housed. As a resident in your district, I ask you to advocate for House of Ruth and encourage the Metro Council Budget Committee to reinstate House of Ruth’s $17,500 in the 2024-25 External Agency budget.

Thank you for your support!

Recovery Cafe Louisville currently has two options for you to become a member. Monday mid morning and Wednesday early evening.

Mondays at 10:00 am we meet at 930 Mary Street and avoid making eye contact with the giant box of . We can smell them as soon as we walk in and we sneak a peek at them when someone grabs one but we are strong- summer is coming after all and we are trying to resist. After proclaiming to everyone that we are not going to eat a donut, we do what everyone knows all along we are going to do and we eat a donut. It is worth it and we only feel a slight bit of guilt (but really not all that much.) I guess what I am trying to say using donuts as a metaphor is this: you are curious about becoming a member. Maybe there are valid reasons why you can’t come this week. Maybe you avoid making eye contact with it. But I tell you this- it’s time to just grab the donut. It is delicious and you won’t regret it.

We workout at 6 on Mondays- bodyweight movement class, all abilities and free with your Recovery Cafe Louisville Membership. Wednesday we workout at 6 then do our Recovery Circle immediately after class. You can afford the tiny calories of a donut-you’re looking beautiful as ever.

PS Membership (and donuts) are FREE at RCLOU

If you haven't seen it...One hundred pages of prompted journal pages, months and months of daily gratitude and 100 blank pages of sketchbook. The entire profit goes directly to Recovery Cafe Louisville. I made this journal because I personally want to be a person who journals but coming up with what to write about on my own is too much- the prompts range anywhere from a simple "today is..." to "Dear Future Me..." Sometimes, just having a blank space to doodle is all I need so this journal flips over and becomes a sketchbook from the other side. Working on myself, on my heart is a 24 hour 7 day a week 365 days a year job - hope this helps. Putting a link in the comments about Recovery Cafe Louisville if you're still curious about what we do.

if you like the journal-let me know- share it! spread the word. if you hate it, just smile and nod it's fine.

100 Days of journal prompts with 3 pages of 30 days of gratitude, flip it for a 100 days of sketchbook pages. Self Care and Recovery is a 24 hour 7 day a week 365 days a year journey. The only rule to using this journal/sketchbook is to not follow any rules- you can journal or doodle the days awa...
