Heads up Boulder County the ticks are already back and thriving in this warm weather! Be prepared with protecting yourselves and your furry friends! I pulled this off the head of my dog this morning.

American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) can transmit several diseases to both humans and animals, including:
Bacterial Infections:
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF):
Caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, this is a serious disease that can lead to fever, rash, and organ failure.
Tularemia:
Caused by Francisella tularensis, this disease can cause fever, swollen lymph nodes, and skin ulcers.
Anaplasmosis:
Caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, this disease can cause fever, headache, and muscle aches.
Protozoal Infections:
Babesiosis: Caused by Babesia microti, this disease can cause anemia, fever, and lethargy.
Viral Infections:
Powassan Virus: This virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).
Other Diseases:
Tick paralysis: This is a rare but potentially fatal condition that can occur when the tick injects a neurotoxin into the host.
It's important to note that not all American dog ticks carry these diseases. However, they are known vectors for these pathogens, so it's essential to take precautions to prevent tick bites.
