“Orthostatic dysregulation (OD) is an autonomic nervous system disorder that commonly occurs in childhood and adolescence. It presents with symptoms such as lightheadedness upon standing, fatigue, and difficulty waking in the morning, and it is frequently associated with school refusal. In recent years, changes in living environments and psychological stress during the COVID-19 pandemic have drawn attention to the emergence and prolonged course of OD symptoms.
TST (Takahiro-style teishin therapy) is an acupuncture approach that employs non-insertive, surface-level contact stimulation to regulate the body holistically via the sensory input system. Because the intensity of stimulation can be finely controlled and is less likely to provoke defense reflexes or fear responses, it is particularly applicable to pediatric patients and highly sensitive, nervous individuals.
In this case, head-focused treatment using a TST teishin was administered to a fourth-grade elementary school student who had stopped attending school due to OD. Long-term improvement in school attendance and overall physical condition was observed, hence the impetus to present this case study.”
This is a short excerpt from my latest translation of Funamizu Takahiro’s “Head-Centered TST Teishin Treatment for Orthostatic Dysregulation: A Case Report,” as featured in the March 2026 issue of NAJOM, Volume 32, Number 96.
